Top 10 Attractions in Miami, Florida

The most prominent features about Miami that attracts tourists is undoubtedly its pristine  beaches. Secondly, an admirable center of  art and finally my own personal favorite – fresh sea food! If clear blue skies, bright sunlight, satiny beaches and miles and miles of endless ocean seems appealing, then this is the right destination for you.

The best thing to do when in Miami is to spend maximum time on its turquoise beaches. Let yourself loose, putting aside all your worries and take a reviving holiday.  Read on to know about the top ten attractions in Miami, Florida.

South Beach Miami

South Beach

It’s not just the beautiful beaches that allures tourists but the calm relaxation of spending hours, undisturbed on a quiet beach that is not overly crowded , enjoying the slow pace of existence. South beach falls in this category and is fore-most on my list of `Top 10 Attractions in Miami, Florida ‘.

Moreover, you can hire deck chairs, umbrella and even towels, from the beach services that are available on an hourly, chargeable basis . These upholstered, soft, beach chairs were the most comfortable I’ve ever lounged on. Before you realize you can easily doze off, with the gentle lull of the waves. And there is no dearth of cafes serving piping hot food. So, once you’re here it’s rather hard to leave!

Top Attractions of Miami

In fact, what I found appreciable is the promenade made of wood planks,  running parallelly to the ocean, at the edge of the sand, towards the city front. For those who do not wish to spend their entire time on the sandy beach, this track is perfect for a stroll, cycling or jogging without missing out on the soothing ocean views.

Miami is sort of a mecca for art, artists and different art forms and is peppered with art galleries and studios.   The famous Wynwood Walls showcases more than 80,000 square feet of street art from artists around the world. An admirable platform for artists to display their talent!

South Beach Miami

You’ll find colorful street art, graffiti between the neighborhood of Downtown and the Design district also, bringing out the creativity and genius of artists.

Then there is the Miami Museum of Contemporary Art – featuring more than 400 works of art.

We really enjoyed the whole grilled fish platter at one of the beach front restaurants. The dish was fresh and flavorful.

Biscayne Bay

The city sparkles in the night, like any other American city. It’s a good idea to set aside the evening for Bayside Marketplace and marina. This place is popular for it’s open air shopping arcade and host of restaurants serving international cuisine. Apart from that visitors can catch up with live musical performances on the Biscayne Bay waterfront, people watch or opt for a cruise tour.

Visit Miami for the sun, sand and surf. You’ll be happy to get a generous dose of vitamin D and enjoy all the activities picked up from this blog `Top 10 Attractions in Miami, Florida’.

LOS ANGELES FAMILY TRAVEL GUIDE

The second largest city of the US, Los Angeles has its own unmatched magnetism. In my growing up years, I recall Los Angeles as the venue of the Olympics. And then subsequently over the years, this most prominent metropolis in California, as the glamorous hub of Hollywood. Beverly hills where stars own palatial houses. And of course Disneyland ! If you’re a Disney fan, and are traveling with your family surely you couldn’t possibly return without a trip to Disneyland in Anaheim.

Best Los Angeles Getaway With Family

As LA is huge, with Anaheim being a city in itself, plan your itinerary in such a way that you first visit the parks. There are two Disney parks  near Los Angeles in Anaheim, 26 miles away. It is highly recommended, to first spend 2-3 days here. Stay in one of the hotels just walking distance from the parks and then move to main  LA for the remaining part of your trip.

HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES

Staying in a centrally located hotel in West Beverly Hills, Hollywood, at the doorstep of the Walk of Fame boulevard has its advantages. Just as you step out, you’ll find yourself on the legendary Walk of Fame boulevard, having the longest list of stars, celebrities and performers.

Hollywood

It’s a pleasure to stroll here. The views of the tree lined street, the blue skies above and brightly colored buildings is picture perfect in the day and transforms into a wonderland in the night when the fluorescent lights are lit.

It was Halloween during that time, and if you too happen to visitng in this month, then look forward to being fully entertained by all sorts of the weirdest and scariest dressed passerby’s.

There are a plethora of museums on the boulevard that can be visited depending upon your interest and time. These include  the Guinness World record museum, World of Illusions and the Hollywood Wax museum to name a few, that are great for families. Also plenty of cultural activities happen – live theatre, art galleries, film complexes and music concerts.

BEVERLY HILLS

Beverly Hills has been the setting of innumerable films, and  to be actually present there was like a dream come true. And above all, the most magical moment was to watch the shooting of a movie starring Brad Pitt on the streets of West Hollywood. This sort of completed our trip and was the ultimate experience.

Hollywood West

If you’re a tourist visiting Los Angeles for the first time, it’s worthwhile to take a chartered tour to the famous Beverly Hills. There are multiple types of private trips with a live commentary at hand including half day, full day or few hours. The three hour tour included Beverly Hills, residence of celebrities and film stars, and finishes off at Rodeo drive . This is actually quite sufficient, as you can do it at your own pace rather than a hurried, longer trip,  in which a lot is squeezed in.

One advice here,  before the tour begins make sure to eat something and be refreshed as there are no stoppages in between, specially if you have younger children accompanying you.

Rodeo Drive

The tour halts at vantage points from where the iconic Hollywood sign is visible on the hill-side. Sunset Point and Bronson Avenue give a clear view, and are ideal spots for photos.

You’ve seen them in movies, now see where your favorite stars live, hang around for a while, listening to interesting stories narrated by your guide, gazing at their posh, sprawling homes/ mansions !!

Afterward, the tour continues onto the upmarket Rodeo drive, with its high class stores of luxury brands. Here again there are no halts and is the final destination, where you are dropped off.

Griffith

Griffith Observatory – There is more to the Griffith Observatory than the exteriors and stunning views of the city from its elevated position. A planetarium inside and a number of ticketed shows too draw tourists.

 FAMOUS BEACHES

Santa Monica beach – the pier at Santa Monica is worth visiting. It’s a picturesque point on the Pacific Ocean, having  loads of activities, a children’s park, or street performers vying for attention and tips.

The other prominent beach of LA is Venice, spectator sports like basketball, baseball, football, soccer etc are played in abundance  on these beaches.

The `city of angels’, looks spectacular after dark when it’s lit up and truly comes alive. The best way to enjoy that is to drive through the streets around the Hollywood area, where traffic congestions are less. Admire the high-rises or the  wonderful houses in the residential neighborhood!

If you wish to have more adventure and unlimited fun, then there is Universal Studios, Hollywood. Apart from the plethora of thrilling rides and sci-fi shows,  of particular interest here are the movie shooting sites, and complete tours of how special effects are created in films.

Santa Monica

Though Los Angeles is fringed by the Pacific Ocean, and has nice beaches, the weather is not typical beach type. It can be classified as a Mediterranean climate – characterized by  dry summers and wet winters. My own experience of the weather in October – sunny and warm during the day and evenings becoming mildly cold as temperatures go down. Going by the diverse activities offered here, travelers can pack accordingly.

There are lots of day trips that can be undertaken from Los Angeles. To write about them would require a separate blog than this `Los Angeles Family Travel Guide’.

NEW YORK CITY ITINERARY – 7 DAYS

There is so much to see and do in New York – the largest and most populous city, lying  on the east coast of North America. Words may not be sufficient to describe the place, you have to experience yourself to know what it means to be there. In this blog I have enlisted top and highly recommended tourist sites of the `Big Apple’ as it is nicknamed.  Let’s begin with its history, New York was originally found by the Dutch who named it `New Amsterdam’. It’s strategic location on the shores of the Atlantic ocean made it the primary seat of activities and soon became an important port. In its contemporary form, New York can be defined as a complete city always on the move, seeped in creativity and abundant imagination – fathomed by one of a kind structures and  colorful murals.

NYC Skyline

You know you are in New York when you find tall skyscrapers extending endlessly to as far as you can see, an inter-mingling of people from diverse ethnicity, a vivacious energy  rarely found anywhere else and of course the familiar yellow taxis on the wide streets. A convenient mode of travel, more so for new comers, these cabs are comfortable and easily available. Though at times the garrulous cabbie may persist on you giving a tip, so just be aware.

The vast megalopolis is divided into five main boroughs of which Manhattan is the primary one. As you traverse the miles from the airport towards  Manhattan,  the cluster of high rise buildings against the background of blue skies and sunlight reflecting on the glass panes has been seen, countless times in movies, in reality too the view is beautiful !! It’s  ideal and worthwhile for tourists to stay in this area and make it their base due to its central location .

New York city

In this blog – `New York city itinerary 7 days’ , I have written about some of the best tourist sites in New York that are absolutely necessary for first timers.

New York is very much defined by its immigrant population as well. An amalgamation of diverse nationalities, culture, cuisine and experiences  is the essence of New York. Statistics reveal that 36% of population living in New York were born outside the US, and as many as 34 different regions are represented in the population. As such, NYC is a one stop destination for every type of traveler – be it family, friends, adventure seekers, foodies. A city that walks fast, talks fast, and is full of a maddening energy of creative souls on the streets.

What better way to experience the spirit of New York, than to get an opportunity to watch the vibrant Columbus Day Parade on the streets of the megalopolis, on our very first day of arriving here !! The colorful parade full of pomp and splendor, music and dance brings to the fore the multi-cultural vibe of New York.

The Big Apple’s glamorous, explosive hub is Fifth Avenue, includes key tourists spots. Some of which are listed below :

Empire State Building  – New York boasts of having  one of the world’s first skyscrapers – the Empire State building. Completed in 1931, The Empire State Building is just as majestic as its name. Enter the marble art deco lobby, from where you’re directed to the high-speed elevator to the 86th floor viewing deck for unhindered 360 degree views. On a clear day the visibility is as much as 130 kilometers . The towering skyscraper has  been the film shooting  location for numerous movies  –  remember Independence Day, King Kong.

Rockefeller Centre  – second after Empire state, the Rockefeller center  has the world’s biggest business and entertainment complexes. You can choose from a gamut of activities here. The `Top of the Rock’ observatory has the most dramatic views, with the skyscrapers being almost in your face close. There are three levels of open air and enclosed viewing terraces.

Statue of Liberty – the most potent symbol of America, this was a gift from France as a token of unity, freedom and the beginning of a new era post revolution. The best way to reach the incredible Statue of Liberty is to take a ferry from  Battery Park. The sole advise from me would be to carry light, as there is a strict security check and heavy bags are not allowed.

Central Park  – this beautiful park is the green stretch of New York and is a soothing break from the endless concrete space. Lot of interesting activities are organized here throughout. During summers a range of performances, musical shows, neighborhood events, concerts keep people enthralled. And with the advent of winters, when the lushness disappears, the park transforms into a naturally made ice-skating rink, full of joyous skaters.

Central Park

The best way to enjoy Central park is unquestionably to  stroll around on foot, halting at key spots, like the Bethesda fountain to admire the `Angel of the Waters’ statue. This is  a great photography point. Another option is to hire a horse drawn carriage ride that takes tourists around the massive precincts. You can sit cozily on these cute carriages that you would have seen in fairy tales. With the furry, soft blanket provided, wrapped around you, absorb the freshness and incredible views. An additional advantage is that you’ll get to know famous, interesting  landmarks in the vicinity, as pointed out by the coachman.

Central park is ideal for a day picnic with your family. You’ll get ample open space, away from the urban cacophony, to find peace and revel in nature.  Other activities would be to ride a bike in the huge park, row a boat in the lake or do a rendezvous of the neighboring zoo..

American Museum of Natural History –  there are innumerable things to see. Visit for its collection of life size dinosaur skeletons and a futuristic planetarium.

Times Square NYC

Times Square – is the pulsating, neon-lit heart of New York. It is the most exciting place to be, nights are  specially very lively. The kaleidoscope of bright lights and fluorescent billboards of Times Square are absolutely captivating. There are a host of entertaining activities happening   always  – live performances,  accompanied with music, rock shows and plenty more. Plus there are numerous shops and eateries for a complete experience. Spend hours here, people watching or gazing around. The well-known Broadway theatre is here too, so if you’re interested and have the time, watch a  play or musical !
Wall Street – Being the financial and business capital of the US, New York has the world famous Wall Street, that has  witnessed a wide spectrum of events – from creating millionaires to the worse stock market crash of 1929.  Here you’ll come across the impressive facade of the New York Stock Exchange. Currently, the visitors gallery is no longer open for spectators to observe the speculators.

Wall Street

And you just can’t come to the financial district without seeing the most recognized icon here – the Bronze Charging Bull. This statue is a  symbol of prosperity, and is supposed to be the harbinger of good luck. So don’t miss visiting and click  pictures. Though there’s no charge for that, but do expect a queue.

I have attempted to include in this blog `New York city itinerary 7 days’ some of the best tourist sites in NY, that are my all time favorites too.

If you wish to undertake a trip to the breathtaking Niagara falls from New York, please read my blog on that  https://travelsimplygo.com/niagara-falls-from-new-york-city-day-trip/

LAS VEGAS – THINGS TO DO WITH KIDS

Are you and your kids excited to see the largest  and most interesting city in the state of Nevada, USA ? Then without much ado make Las Vegas your next holiday destination! An internationally renowned, major resort destination, appropriately  labelled as the `Entertainment capital of the world’. As one of my co-passenger on the flight added during a conversation – it’s a remarkable man-made getaway in the middle of the Nevada desert.

Las Vegas Strip

I must mention at this point, and this is specially for those who are skeptical to vacation with kids in the city of casinos, gambling and glamorous shows. Be assured, Las Vegas is one of the most kid friendly places in the world, having a bunch of attractions meant solely for children. Kids  love Las Vegas, for so many reasons as elaborated in this blog.

WHEN TO GO

Las Vegas  has a sub-tropical, hot and dry desert climate, which is typical of the greater Mojave desert, in which it lies. Summer months between June to September have extremely high temperatures. Hence, the ideal tourist season is after that. Though I believe weather is not at all a deterrent for travel  enthusiasts who are  keen to travel all year round .

THINGS TO DO WITH KIDS – LAS VEGAS STRIP

The colorful Las Vegas Strip is the center of gravity of this desert oasis. Is lined with varied-themed casino resorts, shopping plazas and fine-dining restaurants. The effect is heightened in the night, with it’s  dazzling neon lights and myriad, mind boggling live shows.

Whether you’re walking or driving, keep in mind, the Strip distances are deceiving. What looks like a stone’s throw away always takes longer to reach. Las Vegas is an easy place to get around… most of the spots are walkable. Cabs and uber are easily available within minutes. It also has an excellent public transport system like the monorail and buses for the convenience of tourists.

THEMED-RESORTS –  ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS

Here I have come up with a list of all the varied themed hotel resorts on the Strip and the activities each of these offer :

1) Bellagio  – has a Conservatory and Botanical gardens, blooming with a huge variety of colorful , magnificent flowers, plants and trees. This is the also the venue for the  musical fountain sound and light show on its man-made lake, every evening at a fixed interval ,i.e., 8 and 9 pm.  This grand show is a must-see for families and kids. To have a proper unhindered view , it is advisable to reach the lake few minutes prior, before the crowds start collecting.

Bellagio Fountain,

2) Mirage – the best part about Mirage and one of our favorite too was the `friends with dolphins show’. This half an hour paid show is full of fun and frolic.  Guests get to interact with these mischievous though gentle beings . There’s also the Siegfried and Roy’s secret garden, where you can spot the white tiger and leopard.

3) New York-New-York –  as the name suggests recreates the charms of New York  right in the center of Las Vegas. Has the iconic Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge and the Empire State building. Also  located here is Hershey’s Chocolate World, a flagship store having a variety of chocolates and candies. No wonder New-York hotel is kid’s favorite place!

Hotel New York. Vegas

4) Paris –is there any need to visit New York or Paris when it’s all there in one place, i.e., Las Vegas?? Paris hotel  has a huge replica of the Eiffel Tower. The best views of the dazzling, neon lit Strip is definitely from it’s observation deck on the top of the tower. It’s a nice idea to buy a ticket and spend some time here to enjoy the fabulous views.

LAS VEGAS MALLS

There are so many free activities in Las Vegas for everyone – kids, youngsters, adults. There’s no dearth of entertainment for kids in `Sin city’ as it is popularly known as. A  good way to know what is going on around is to check on the app too.

Equally worth exploring are the numerous luxurious malls and shopping arcades of Vegas.

5) Venetian – stepping into the plush interiors and  impressive architecture of this mall transports you to Venice. Not just the ceiling resembling the star-lit blue skies of Venice but also the Grand Canal flowing through it’s center. Tourists can even opt for a paid gondola ride. In addition, to enhance the authenticity of the experience, the gondola drivers sing  melodious songs . The Venetian is an ideal place to chill,  indulge in a shopping spree at the signature stores of luxury brands or dine at a multi-cuisine restaurant.

Venetian mall, las vegas

Las Vegas is a destination where you’re sure to find an adventure at every corner.  Visitors beware! don’t be alarmed if suddenly you hear a thunderous explosion as you’re walking down the Strip with your family !! This is actually the volcano show that takes place outside the Mirage hotel. Your heart would skip a beat as the  massive, artificial volcano erupts, spewing out smoke and fire, accompanied by riveting music in the background.

6) Freemont Street – this is the most famous street in the heart of downtown Las Vegas. Being the casino corridor of Nevada, it has famous, high-end casinos and pubs . This spot has a very retro vibe. Covered with a dazzling canopy, there’s a zipline running through the roof for some adrenal pumping action!

7) High Roller (Ferris wheel) – another to-do activity in Vegas is a 30 minute ride on the 550-foot tall giant Ferris wheel. Amazing views of the glittering Boulevard and far beyond is the highlight here.

High Roller View

Another in the list of theme hotels is the Pyramid, represented by a huge black pyramid shaped structure visible from a distance.

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK

A trip to Las Vegas, Nevada would be incomplete without visiting one of the  Wonders of the World – the Grand Canyon ! Located in the state of Arizona, it takes approximately one and a half hours, first by  bus and then helicopter, to reach the Grand Canyon National Park from the Strip. Make sure to pre-book all the tickets in advance to avoid disappointments.

Discover incredible aerial views aboard the helicopter ride as it soars over the park’s most astonishing rock formations and features ! The exposed layers of colorful rocks are created by the incision of the Colorado river and it’s tributaries. From the chopper, the Navajo bridge and lake Mead can also be seen.

Grand Canyon

This was the most unique, natural phenomenon we had ever seen. The stunning views of the enormous flame-colored walls plunging 4800 feet down into the gorge of the Colorado river is absolutely intriguing.  The Grand Canyon is also a World Heritage site.

These are a list of things to do with kids in Las Vegas that await you . We had our fair share of fun !! Remember to take this list on your vacation to Vegas. Comments on this blog are welcome!

HOW TO VISIT – NIAGARA FALLS FROM NEW YORK CITY DAY TRIP

If you are holidaying in New York city and are looking for a short one day getaway , then head to the spectacular Niagara Falls. This world famous, natural wonder is a highly recommended tourist spot worth visiting.  This blog is about the best way to visit Niagara Falls from New York city in a day.

Niagara Falls are located close to Canada, on the USA-Canada border. Though the distance from New York is close to 400 miles. Thanks to American Airlines, a Niagara Falls from New York day trip is possible comfortably. The flight duration from New York to Niagara falls nearest airport Buffalo is barely 50 minutes, from here it takes about half an hour by taxi to reach the falls . Travelers need to ensure that they book their to and fro tickets in advance to avoid any disappointments.

If waking up at the crack of dawn, in the midst of a vacation, to take a flight , is not what you are comfortable doing – it is absolutely fine!! You have the option of catching the late morning 10am flight to be able to reach the falls  easily by 11.30 am. Spending 5-6 hours are sufficient for sightseeing and enjoying  this natural wonder.

NIAGARA FALLS FROM NEW YORK CITY DAY TRIP – THE BEST WAY

The ideal time of the year to visit Niagara falls is between the months of May and October. Later than that would be freezing. The weather all year round is chilly, wet and windy. Tourists are advised to wear or at least carry proper woollens, coats, jackets, gloves, mufflers and boots.

As you enter the vicinity of the falls, you can soak in great views of the gorgeous, gigantic falls from the observation deck above, resembling a vast silvery sheet.  Also visible from here is the skyline of the city of Ontario, Cananda on the other side, across the falls.

Even more enchanting is the incredible, thrilling boating experience on the iconic boat, `Maid of the Mist’. The boat takes excited tourists right upto the basin of the falls. To reach the point below from where the boat journey commences, there are  lifts for the convenience of tourists. For those who  have enough time and who seek adventure, can go ahead and take the steps. The free of cost eco- friendly, water-proof ponchos handed out at the entrance is a blessing in disguise. It actually is an essential requirement,    protecting  guests from the intense showers pouring out from the cascading waters. Remember to carry water proof cameras and other gadgets as getting drenched is inevitable.

ONE DAY BREAK – NIAGARA FALLS FROM NEW YORK CITY DAY TRIP

As the `Maid of the Mist’ makes its way on the foamy, rapid waters, the sight of the mystical , thundering waterfalls is mind blowing. Encountering the mammoth waterfalls so closely is out of the world. It feels as if you are standing below the falling, billowing waters.

After this fun-filled  boat trip, and with some time on hand,  it is a great idea to take a walk on the road running parallely to the Falls. Savour the sight of the misty , roaring falls descending into the gorge below on one side and beautiful orange and yellow hued tree lined promenade on the other. As you saunter further down the path,  it will lead you to the point from where the falls originate – a flowing stream.  The gurgling stream surrounded by  forests  is picture perfect and is a great spot to click  photos .  Unwind here for a while, before heading back to the airport for your flight back to New York.

This Niagara Falls from New York city  day trip  has been the most memorable and greatly cherished trips ever.

Disney parks have been made on an unbelievably massive scale and boasts of three main Dysney parks – Epcot, Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom. A surprise at every corner, excitement all around , people have a great time here.

A GUIDE TO DISNEYWORLD, FLORIDA – PARKS

MAGIC KINGDOM

By far, this is the top most theme park in Disneyworld and the most popular amongst children. It surely connects us to our childhood. Featuring Cinderella’s Castle at the centre of the park, this is the place where live shows are held twice a day and a magnificient fireworks and a musical projection show in the night!!

Grand parade, featuring Disney and other cartoon characters take place twice in a day along the Main Street leading from the Castle. These are absolutely not to be missed events in Magic Kingdom. Haunted Mansion is truly scary and is definitely not for the weak hearted!
Magic Kingdom is further divided into three main pockets, each having a particular theme.

Fantasyland , as the name suggests has the theme of fairies, and classical animated movies. Meet Disney characters like Elza, Anna , Snow White, Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald. Sing along, as the boat moves forward on the ride`it’s a small world’ .
Tomorrowland has a futuristic theme, and all the rides and simulators are based on that. Take a fast ride into space in the thrilling rollercoaster – the `Space Mountain’ . Enjoy many more such euphoric rides that pump up the adrenalin!

Adventureland, is all about forests and animals and resembles a mini forest, complete with a river. Even the staff wear khaki uniform to add to the authenticity. A boat trip on the river is worth the experience as it is full of fun and adventure. The lady at the wheel, who was our guide, had guests in splits with her witty jokes.

Along the way you encounter dangerous wild animals (though thankfully not the real ones) . Then there is an amazing tiki show ( a musical bird show) in the Tiki room at Adventureland.
It is incredible and to the sheer delight of children, whole lot of items sold in Disneyworld are in the shape of Mickey-Minnie’s ears – ice-creams, lollies, popcorn bucket, hair band, key chains . The Disney store in each of these parks have awesome souvenirs , toys and clothes.

EPCOT

This Disney park has a lake at its centre , where the magnificent firework and a sound and light show happens in the night. Half of Epcot depicts different countries around the globe and their varied cultures, thus focussing on universal harmony. This is showcased in the form of music, dance, food and architecture, which is so interesting. The other half has rides and simulations based on the theme of science, technology, space and the future .

ANIMAL KINGDOM

Animal Kingdom is based on the theme of the jungle . This is one of the quieter and greener parks and my personal favourite too. Within the park there is a wildlife sanctuary , guests can take a jeep trip to closely see wonderful wild animals roaming about freely . The rustic, tribal bonhomie of the surroundings are fascinating in Animal Kingdom. One of the attractions that gave me the high was the Kali river rapids, in which you plunge down treacherously from a topsy, turvy cascading river. Other attractions here include the vibrant, colourful `Finding Memo’ Puppet show, Tree of Life show and many more.

2. To avoid waiting in the serpentine ques for most of the rides and shows, it is highly recommended to book fast pass tickets prior to your trip. This would give visitors more time on hand to explore the entire park.
