There’s a certain kind of joy in discovering an offbeat place that isn’t on everyone’s radar.

No long queues.

No rushed photo stops

No pressure to “cover everything.”

Instead, there’s space – to breathe, to observe, and to truly connect.

Just the quiet excitement of stepping into the unknown—and letting the place reveal itself, one moment at a time.

Some of my most memorable travel experiences haven’t come from famous cities or tourist hotspots, but from lesser-known destinations I almost overlooked. A riverside town where evenings linger longer than usual. A mountain retreat where silence feels comforting, not empty. An island where time seems to dissolve into the flow of the waves.

Sometimes, the most meaningful travel moments happen in places you hadn’t even heard of until recently—where directions are still asked from locals, where smiles feel genuine, and where life unfolds at its own unhurried pace.

These places may not always make it to trending lists or glossy travel brochures—but they stay with you. And perhaps that’s what makes travel truly meaningful—not just where we go, but how a place makes us feel.

Why Lesser-Known Destinations in Asia Are the Future of Travel

While famous destinations like Bali, Tokyo, and Bangkok continue to dominate travel wishlists, Asia still holds countless secrets waiting to be uncovered. These underrated destinations offer not just beauty, but authenticity—the kind that transforms a trip into a memory you carry for years.

Skip the crowds. These offbeat, hidden gems across Asia, though least talked about, offer soul-stirring beauty, cultural depth, and the kind of magic that lingers long after you’ve returned home.

1. Luang Prabang, Laos — Where Time Slows Down

Luang Prabang is a historic city in northern Laos, tucked between the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, surrounded by mountains and lush greenery.

This UNESCO-listed town has beautiful, golden temples like Wat Xieng Thong shimmering at sunrise, monks walking silently through quiet streets collecting alms, French colonial architecture blended with traditional Lao houses, and natural wonders like Kuang Si Falls nearby.

The pace of life invites you to slow down—something we rarely allow ourselves while traveling.

Climb Mount Phousi for panoramic views, take a boat ride to the turquoise Kuang Si Falls, or simply sit at a riverside café and watch the world drift by.

Why It Wins You Over: Its serenity, Luang Prabang doesn’t demand your attention—it earns it.

Offbeat Places in Asia

2. Hoi An, Vietnam — Lanterns, Legacy, and Slow Evenings

A perfect addition to “underrated destinations” in Asia is Hoi An in central Vietnam

Yes, Vietnam is popular—but Hoi An is a beautifully preserved, ancient town, which is situated along the coast of the South China Sea, near the city of Da Nang, and about 30 km away.

Being here feels almost like stepping into another era—romantic, timeless, and quietly enchanting.

At dusk, the town transforms into a dreamscape of glowing lanterns reflected in the Thu Bon River.

Local markets, heritage homes, quiet cafés, and tailor shops add to its allure. Nearby beaches like An Bang Beach are great spots to chill.

Or the historic charm of sites like the  Japanese Covered Bridge.

Why It Leaves a Lasting Impression: The evenings here don’t just pass— they invite you to pause and stay a little longer.

Offbeat Places in Asia

3. Tawang, India — A Himalayan Escape Few Talk About

A scenic town located in the northeastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, Tawang is one of India’s best-kept secrets.

Lying high up in the eastern Himalayas, it has the stunning Tawang Monastery, one of the largest Buddhist monasteries in the world. Combined with snow-capped mountains, high-altitude passes like Sela Pass and serene lakes create an atmosphere that feels both spiritual and surreal.

The journey to get here isn’t easy—but that’s precisely why it remains untouched. It’s a peaceful, less-explored destination, perfect for travelers who love mountains, spirituality, and raw natural beauty.

Why It Wins You Over: It offers solitude in its purest form.

4. Siquijor, Philippines — The Island of Mystique

Often overshadowed by Palawan and Boracay, Siquijor carries an air of mystery. It is called the “Island of Fire” (from the glow of fireflies seen by Spanish explorers)

Known for its folklore and healing traditions, the island surprises visitors with pristine beaches, waterfalls, lush forests and a laid-back vibe that feels almost timeless.

Rent a scooter, explore hidden coves, and let the island reveal itself slowly.

Why It Wins You Over: It’s as enchanting as it is unexplored.

5. Kampot, Cambodia — Riverside Calm and Colonial Charm

If you’re seeking Cambodia beyond Angkor Wat, Kampot delivers in the most understated way.

Kampot is an attractive riverside town in southern Cambodia. Set along the Praek Tuek Chhu River, not far from the Gulf of Thailand coast, it is about a 2–3 hour drive from Phnom Penh.

Kampot is especially known for:

  • It’s relaxed, old-world vibe with French colonial architecture
  • Pepper plantations stretching into the horizon, producing the finest peppers in the world

  • Easy access to natural spots like Bokor National Park
  • Slower, softer riverside sunsets and laid-back travel experiences

Why It Wins You Over: It teaches you to do nothing—and enjoy it. It’s one of those places that doesn’t try too hard—yet quietly wins you over.

Travel Tips for Exploring Underrated Destinations

  • Go with an open mind: These places may lack luxury, but they make up for it in authenticity.

  • Travel responsibly: Support local businesses and respect cultural traditions.

  • Be flexible: Infrastructure may not always be perfect—but that’s part of the charm.

  • Stay longer: The magic of these destinations reveals itself slowly.

In a world where travel is often reduced to checklists and Instagram posts, choosing an underrated destination is gaining momentum—inviting us to slow down, wander without an agenda, and experience places in a more meaningful, unfiltered way.

I find the internet bombarded with travel reels on things to see and do in and around Bengaluru. One scroll, one clip, and suddenly you’re dreaming of zipping on the open roads to an exotic destination not too far from home.

The choice is endless- you can pick from tranquil lakes, hiking trails, hilly getaways, nature resorts, ancient temples, and serene ashrams.

With Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp flooded with clips and forwards, travel looks effortless and inviting.

Travel content creators are doing a fabulous job influencing people, sharing valuable information, and making spontaneous getaways easier than ever to plan.

Inspired by all of this, I planned a day trip to the ancient temple of Lepakshi, 120 km from Bengaluru, on the border with Andhra Pradesh.

Day trips are hassle-free; there’s no need to book hotels, pack suitcases, or check in—just hop in and go.

An Early Start Calls For A Relaxing Tea Break

Though starting from home at 6:30 am isn’t usually my thing, once in a while it’s okay. And it turned out to be a wise decision — the early morning traffic was sparse, the drive smooth and quick, and the journey comfortable.

Soon, the road stretched ahead, and the outskirts of the city came into view. It felt refreshing to leave the cacophony of urban existence behind, to enjoy the fresh morning air.

We stopped for what was supposed to be a quick tea break, but ended up indulging in a piping-hot, scrumptious South Indian breakfast, which is my favorite comfort food. Re-energised, resumed our journey.

A Scenic Detour For The Hidden Gem

I had earlier watched a travel reel showing a pristine lake en route to Lepakshi, and we were keen to stop there. However, there were no signboards or clear directions in sight.

Thankfully, life is simpler these days — you no longer need to stop at random crossings to ask people in a language they don’t understand. Google Maps came to our rescue, guiding us. A short detour and a couple of kilometers later, our familiar GPS voice prompt announced, “You’ve arrived at your destination.”

It was the perfect photo spot, where we took pictures before moving on. Perhaps a path less trodden, the picture-postcard water body, surrounded by hills, was untouched, its serenity intact.

It was disappointing to see such a beautiful lake with no signs leading to it and neglected. With a little care and maintenance, it could easily become an attractive tourist destination, but sadly, it has been left as it is.

As we continued, the landscape slowly transformed. Serene countryside, rugged hills, and emerald palm groves surrounded us, signalling that we were close. And before we knew it, the majestic Lepakshi temple stood before us. Arriving early was unexpected and felt welcome.

Lepakshi Temple

Stepping Into Timelessness At Lepakshi

This protected ancient site is absolutely amazing—its stone-carved traditional architecture, intricate designs, ceiling paintings, and sacred, peaceful atmosphere feel as though they belong to another era altogether.

Historically significant are the temple of Veerbhadra (a form of Lord Shiva), the famous hanging pillar, and the murals.

This trip turned out to be more than just a visit to an ancient temple in Lepakshi. It was about slowing down!

Sometimes, the best trips are the simplest ones — the open road leading you to somewhere meaningful, a quaint town, the countryside, and a touch of spirituality.

Sometimes, we are so caught up in our everyday routines that we forget to press the pause button, take a break, and explore our own city’s hangouts!

It’s always the usual drill — work, household chores, and maybe the occasional dinner out during the weekends. But how often do we slow down, step out of the loop to rejuvenate, and play tourist in our own city?

I had one such “wake-up” moment recently.

Having lived in Bangalore for over a decade, I suddenly realized it had been years since I last visited the famous Lalbagh Gardens — our very own timeless green oasis. The park that draws visitors from across the country had become just a name on a signboard I’d pass by while zipping through traffic.

Lalbagh Garden Bangalore

What pushed me to go finally?

The famous Lalbagh Flower Show, of course!

Every year, on Republic Day and Independence Day, the gardens host a grand display of flowers in all shapes, colors, and creative arrangements. This year, I decided to visit and, in true “Bangalore style,” put together an impromptu plan.

There was no elaborate scheduling, and somehow, the “stars” also aligned.

The day began with that familiar Bangalore nip in the morning air and a drizzle. By the time I reached Lalbagh, the gates were already buzzing with people—families with excited kids, photography enthusiasts juggling their gear, and groups of youngsters enjoying their time together.

Stepping inside the park and continuing further, the flower arrangements were beautiful!

Imagine walking through arches of flowers, discovering roses sculpted into giant structures, orchids spilling over in every shade you can imagine, and chrysanthemums arranged in patterns so neat that they looked like woven carpets.

In the middle of all this stood the iconic Glass House! Wrapped in the lush surroundings, I felt so alive and free.

Wandering from one flower display to another, sometimes pausing to click photos, other times just soaking it all in. It wasn’t just the flowers; it was the atmosphere. You could hear patriotic songs playing softly in the background, see kids waving little flags, and feel this sense of togetherness that was both festive and grounding.

Lalbagh Garden Bangalore

The best part? There was no rush. For a few hours, time slowed down.

As I finally made my way out, I sat on a shaded bench, sipping coconut water, watching the crowds go by. It was: simple, refreshing, and what I needed. A reminder that joy doesn’t always come from expensive getaways or holidays in exotic, faraway destinations. Sometimes it’s right there in your own city. The entire experience struck a different chord in me.

Sometimes, all it takes is one spontaneous plan to reconnect not just with your surroundings, but with yourself!

The Good And The Not-So-Good Side Of Japan

No matter how fantastic a destination, it will have some drawbacks… some shades of gray !

Japan is a country that is mostly seen with rose-tinted glasses by tourists. 99.7% true, but everything cannot always be perfect to a T!

As a tourist who spent 15 days in Japan, here is an account of my best experiences and also those below expectations. (The Good And The Not-So-Good Side Of Japan)

The positives :

– Everything in Japan is remarkably streamlined and hi-tech, making daily life easy. Innovation is woven into every aspect of living, creating a smooth and hassle-free experience for its citizens and tourists.

– Japan’s public transport system is incredibly efficient and fast, cutting down travel time, helping commuters save both time and money. Its punctuality, comfort, and extensive network make getting around the country a seamless experience.

– Automated vending machines cater to a range of needs, offering everything from hot meals to refreshing beverages at the press of a button. These machines are conveniently located across cities, ensuring that quick, quality service is always within easy reach.

– The variety of fresh, ready-to-eat food options available at convenience stores is mind-blowing—you’ll get packed meals, bento boxes, salads, cut fruits, and desserts. It’s so convenient; people in a hurry can just grab and eat on the go.

– Anime-themed cafes are such an interesting and unique concept in Japan. These fascinating, immersive experiences bring characters and stories to life. Additionally, the variety and quality of merchandise at anime theme stores are amazing, attracting people of all ages.

On the Downside:

– Most shops and restaurants in Japan close surprisingly early. Being used to shopping and dining late in India, sometimes even upto 11 or 12 pm, this was beyond my understanding!

– In Tokyo, we couldn’t get a table at restaurants around 8:30 pm after a visit to Tokyo Tower, as most were sold out.

– In Kyoto, the Imperial Palace closes promptly at 4 pm; that can be quite early for people who prefer to start their day late. Although we arrived at 3:15 pm, entry was denied to us as the last admission is even earlier.

Didn’t know about these strict schedules; otherwise, I would have planned accordingly and avoided disappointment!

The best way to explore any new city is by foot, and that’s exactly what I did in Japan. However, the lack of benches, seats, or resting spots often left me exhausted. In contrast to other places, this country has relatively few public seating areas inside malls, shopping arenas, train stations, or along the streets, as we might be used to. The only practical option was to take a break at cafes or restaurants whenever needed.

These are some points to be kept in mind while planning long walks or sightseeing.

Despite these minor setbacks, Japan is one of those extraordinary destinations that is worth visiting more than once.

An Epic Day Trip To Mount Fuji

Getting a view of Mount Fuji in Japan can be a bit tricky, but when you do, it’s absolutely jaw-dropping!

The weather often plays spoilsport, covering the mountain like a veil, making it impossible to get a clear view.

My day trip too to this must-visit site began with skepticism as it turned out to be a cloudy day. But the predictions showing clear skies later in the day was like the glimmer of hope!

Day Trip to Mt. Fuji

Day Trip to Mt. Fuji
Mt. Fuji Japan

Kawaguchiko (the gateway to Mt. Fuji) region is full of scenic vistas—beautiful lakes, verdant parks, gardens, and hills.

The best way of traveling from Tokyo is by train. The iconic super fast trains of Japan are an experience in themselves, rewarding travelers with great views!

On reaching the town (Kawaguchiko), it was drizzling, and my heart sank. It seemed unlikely to catch a glimpse of Fuji that day. Imagine traveling from so far away, just for a day, only to experience this kind of disappointment.

The best way then was to take the cable car to a point on a hilltop, which was attempted but with not much luck!

Finally, I just hopped onto a tourist bus, thinking that atleast I must explore the picturesque town before heading back. But surprisingly landed at a park, and this is what I encountered……

The most spectacular, picture postcard views of the mountain..…at such close proximity…. it was unexpected, unbelievable!

Journeying on the Best Luxury Houseboat in Kerala

In the genre of immersive tourism a trip to Kerala’s backwaters scores higher than any other experience. This form of slow travel implies the art of not rushing around when traveling, in an attempt to tick off as many tourist attractions as possible in a short time. Secondly, allowing the world to move just a little slower so that we actually notice it.

Kerala, in South India, better known as God’s Own Country is dotted with a host of beautiful tourist spots — rolling, misty mountains, verdant forests, pristine beaches, and backwaters and is endowed with lush greenery.

Having heard so much about the famous `backwaters’ in Kumarakom, this trip was planned much in anticipation. I wasn’t sure whether it was a hype or not, but the stage was being set for something amazing.

Indulging in a slow travel experience, relaxation, and leisure were the key ingredients of this trip. To immerse fully in the experience at our own unhurried pace, truly absorbing the essence of the place!

The train is the best way to travel on this route till Kottayam in Kerala. Moreover, the convenience of sleeping your way through this night-long journey makes it ideal. We reached Kottayam at 11.30 am which is the nearest station, 10 km away from Kumarakom.

A half-hour cab ride later, bearing the sultry weather, we reached our resort in Kumarakom, nestled on the periphery of the famous Vembanad lake. The lake-facing abode had picturesque views — a massive expanse of water peppered with tiny boats, the shores fringed with swaying palm trees.

Experiencing the Backwaters Aboard a Houseboat

This is something that tourists especially travel for….. a rendezvous in a traditional houseboat, drifting along the tranquil backwaters. You have a choice of opting from 5-hour excursions, to more indulgent overnight stays. Our chosen slot was from 12 noon to evening 5 pm, ensuring a unique daytime experience.

The sheer sight of the majestic vessel docked at the lake was enough to elevate your spirits, a testament to its eco-friendly construction from materials like jute, bamboo, and wood. Its design closely resembling a traditional row boat, lending an air of rustic charm. The interiors too had elegance and comfort interwoven seamlessly, featuring two bedrooms with attached washrooms. Offering a touch of luxury in the lap of nature, on the deck a thoughtfully arranged dining table and chairs provided a scenic setting for serving meals.

Houseboat on Backwaters

Treasured Moments All the Way

Present on board are a chef and the boatman, who accompany guests. The latter know the directions and geography of the area on the tips of their fingers and tourists are reassured that they are in safe hands for the next few hours. The chef’s role is to ensure that everyone is well fed and happy….. providing warm, delicious, freshly cooked local cuisines.

After all the welcome formalities were complete on boarding, the boat navigated through the Vembanad lake, leading into the intricate network of backwaters and canals.

As the boat made its way on the sparkling lake, sometimes through lush greenery, an archway of palm trees or through the endless stretch of verdant paddy fields. We relaxed on the cane chairs on the deck with music and eatables. The pleasant breeze was a balm to the soul, as we savored the beauty of the  surroundings, absorbing the soothing sights.

This was an epitome of immersive travel that I’ve ever experienced. Far from the madding crowds, free of any agendas, or rushing from one destination to the next. Merely being, doing nothing and just appreciating the journey itself!

Within an hour of the commencement of the journey, the houseboat had crossed the lake and entered the backwaters. On both sides of the canal there are narrow pieces of land on which local people build houses and live in them. The main entrance of these houses face the canals and there are no roads or pathways as such. People here use long and narrow boats to travel — which is easier, and faster.

An important component of slow travel is connecting with the culture and environment of the place, and tasting the local cuisine. This is exactly what we did –   and it turned out to be one of the most meaningful travel experiences!

Even though it is the peak summer season in Dubai, with the temperature crossing the 45-degree mark, there is no dearth of tourists in this region of the United Arab Emirates. Malls, hotels, restaurants, tourist spots, and roads are choc-a-block.

An epitome of luxury, affluence, and extravagance, Dubai, exudes an aura that makes you feel like royalty. The grandiose airport with its lavish décor lending a sense of glitz and glamour is the first thing you notice as you exit your flight. Of course, there is also a cutting-edge system that streamlines all the procedures.

This was my second trip as a tourist, and I stayed for a week. Otherwise, this Middle eastern city is usually a stop-over — a transit point to take flights to Europe and America.

One of the seven Emirates that constitute the UAE, Dubai is known for its incredible transformation from a small fishing village, and a trading port into a global city and a major international hub for business, tourism, and luxury. The deserts of Arabia have always attracted me — from the picture-perfect golden sand dunes to culture, food, the famous Arabian dance, and mind-blowing architecture.

I got an opportunity to learn more and delve into the lifestyle of the people of the UAE on this trip; described here in my dubai travel diaries. The rapidly evolving culture is a blend of traditional customs and values, alongside a significant influence of modernization. People in the Emirati community are strongly devout, dress traditionally, and adhere to conventions.

Despite its modernity, Dubai has maintained its cultural heritage. This is apparent in a number of ways :

Traditional markets called the souks give tourists a glimpse into the past and the kind of markets that once existed. Spice, gold, colognes, incense, fabrics, dates, and artifacts are among the things tourists can purchase at these shops.

Experience the distinct heritage of Dubai in the neighborhood of Al Seef. Steeped in history, the vibrant colors of Old Dubai come alive, giving you a chance to discover more about this Arabian city.

You can go shopping, explore the maze-like lanes between the beige-colored buildings, or take a ride on the traditional abra boat at Dubai Creek.

Dubai has morphed into a multicultural society and is home to a diverse population consisting of people from all over the world who come to live and work in the city. A place where you weave a dream and it turns out to be true. This diversity contributes to its cosmopolitan atmosphere.

My Dubai Travel Diary encompasses top tourist destinations, I wouldn’t be listing according to the top-rated attractions, but rather the recently opened ones that are intriguing:

Museum of the Future — I was told, that this fairly new attraction in Dubai is a must-visit and I was absolutely not mistaken. There is a lot of interesting stuff inside in addition to the exteriors, which is eye-catching owing to its distinctive shape and design. Get ready to journey to the year 2071 at the Future Museum. Your journey begins by being escorted in a lift that resembles a spacecraft, taking you to an Orbital space station. This is on the top floor, and from there you can tour the floors below. Tickets priced at 186 dirhams are not very reasonable, but it’s worth it.

Having a photograph clicked with this unique structure in the background is aesthetically pleasing. The highlight of the Future Museum is the viewing deck on the outside, where you get a chance to take photos.

Dubai Frame — Embellishing the skyline is the golden-hued Dubai Frame. This 150-meter-tall rectangular frame-like structure offers breathtaking panoramic views of both old and new Dubai.

It has its two towers connected by a 93-meter-long glass-floored bridge at the top. Walking on this Skydeck is a thrilling experience, as you can see the ground directly below your feet. For me, it was an uncanny feeling, hence people with acrophobia should be cautious.

As you enter you’ll come across an interactive exhibit and gallery portraying the history of Dubai and before exiting a 3-D show on the future vision of this Arabian metropolis. Tickets priced at 52 dirhams are quite affordable.

A time-saving tip — visit the Dubai Frame after seeing the future museum. As these two are located close by, both can be covered within 4 hours.

Dubai Travel Diaries

Burj Khalifa — the tallest skyscraper in the world knows no introduction. Guests can go up to the 124th & 125th floors or 148th and 154th floors. Then there are prime hours and non-prime hours, for which ticket costs are different.

A host of activities revolve around this iconic landmark that shimmers and sparkles in the night. There is the fountain show happening several times a day, just outside the building. The entire area is exquisitely lit up in the night and dazzles with a light show. Having a room with a view of this towering structure from our hotel (Taj Dubai) was like a feather in the cap and was the most fulfilling experience.

Dubai
Author’s Album : Dubai Mall

Dubai Mall — This enormous mall serves as the entrance to Burj Khalifa and is a symbol of luxury and entertainment. You’ll find every high-end luxury brand outlet under its roof. There’s always a lingering fragrance emanating as you walk around, uplifting your spirits.

There’s a wide choice of restaurants and food as well. Finding your way around may not be easy, digital map screens on every floor help tourists navigate. It is not just a shopping center but also features attractions like an ice skating rink, an aquarium, and a waterfall.

Other famous malls in Dubai are the Mall of Emirates and Ibn Batuta.

A string of theme parks, namely, Legoland, Motion Gate, and Aquaventure Water Park are some other attractions to enthrall tourists.

Favorite Things to do in Goa

Goa is a ‘happy’ place, always full of surprises, attracting national and international tourists. Not only is it famous for its satiny white beaches and happening nightlife, but also has strikingly beautiful centuries-old churches, heritage architecture, and pretty, natural landscapes adding to its charms. You’ll be treated to a variety of rejuvenating experiences, whether it’s exhilarating water sports at the beach or heritage walks in Old Goa, compelling people to make it a yearly vacation destination!

Here’s a list of some of the favorite things to do in Goa :

Even though it may sound cliché, there is more to Goa than its beaches, let’s begin by exploring that :

Panjim

The capital of Goa is located in north Goa along the banks of the glittering Mandovi river. Where else would you find a spectacular white church, a red and gold temple, and grand ochre-colored mansions crowned with terracotta tiles all sharing a lush, terraced hillside? Panjim manages to retain its colonial-era glory to this day. Goa is one place where you’ll find floating casinos on the river Mandovi, which look resplendent when lit up in the night.

Delve into the lively vibe of heritage, art, music, and food at the Old Latin Quarters – Fountainhas. Walk around the streets to discover houses and buildings painted in vibrant hues, cafes, and art galleries.

Where else would you get to gaze at miles and miles of the endless ocean than in Goa. Though there are a host of beaches in Goa, some of the favorites are as below :

Goa

Calungate

The beach here seems to stretch with uniform coloured shacks and beach umbrellas as far as the eyes can see. Tourists can have a comfortable stay for as long as they wish, on the beach chairs; Order a variety of yummy food and chilled drinks served while you are lounging !

This is where you can indulge in water sports activities such as jet skiing, parasailing, boat ride, and much more. Calangute beach is quite popular with tourists so it can get crowded.

Colva

If you prefer quieter beaches with a laid back vibe then definitely it has to be Colva or Majorda beaches. These are more off-beat spots, have patches of  greenery around and are less crowded. The sound of waves crashing around you and the cool sand between your toes is heavenly. Staying in North Goa and going to these beaches in South Goa is an experience in itself as you traverse through a typical Goanese village Salcate, passing serene Churches, emerald fields, spice plantations and forests.

Goa

Miramar beach – this beach in north Goa though devoid of shacks, eating joints, or water sports activities, is great for spending a casual evening during the sunset hours. Enjoy the natural charm, sunset, and cool breeze,  as you watch tourists’ boats passing by.

KONARK SUN TEMPLE – 9 INTERESTING FACTS

The beautiful mystical temples of India, are a true reflection of a country enriched with an incomparable historical and cultural past and exotic architecture.

One such magnificent gem is the ancient Konark temple in Orissa. Also known as the Sun Temple, dedicated to the Sun God, is located 40 kilometers from another famous temple town, Puri (well known for the Jagannath temple), and is close to the seashores of the Bay of Bengal. The architecture of this 775 year old temple is magnificent, attracting thousands of visitors every day. The tall structure you see at the start is not the actual temple, as some may believe; the main temple is located after that.

HORSE-DRAWN CHARIOT WITH WHEELS AT THE FRONT

The entrance was constructed in the shape of a massive chariot with wheels (30 meters high) drawn by seven horses. This used to be much higher than it is now, though much of it is in ruins. The entire temple is built in the Kalinga or Orissa style and is carved out of stone;  embellished with beautiful artwork and geometrical patterns. A visit to this world heritage site is best appreciated by hiring a guide. During this one-hour tour, tourists learn interesting facts about that era plus the historical and religious significance of the temple.

The intricate stone carvings all around depict 13th-century lifestyle and culture, bearing an uncanny resemblance to modern-day living. Motifs of deities, royalty, trees, and animals (notably giraffes, elephants, and serpents) are equally captivating.

MAIN TEMPLE

At the stairs leading to the main temple a massive, stone figure of a lion welcomes visitors, symbolising power. While on the adjacent side, there is an elephant sculpture depicting war. Currently, the main temple (or the `mandapa’) is inaccessible to the general public due to the ongoing restoration work, however, it would be open to visitors in the near future. On the top of the structure, you can see the exquisite sculpture of the Sun God in green stone.

Sundial Wheel
Konark Sun Temple is a 13th-century CE sun temple at Konark in Puri on the coastline of Odisha,

The wheels are not only pieces of art with fine engraved work, but also have the unique feature of a sun clock. Your guide will show you how this remarkable sundial works, displaying precise time with the movement of the sun’s rays.

Within the precincts of the temple, there is a museum also that provides information and details about the temple.

An important tip when visiting the Konark Sun temple is to carry drinking water and wear sunglasses /cap as it becomes quite hot and sunny. Within the complex, there is a decent restaurant that serves food.

Finally, on your return, it is worth stopping at the pristine beach, layered with velvety sand, which surprisingly is quite clean.

KOLKATA TRAVEL PLACES

If you wish to feel the real essence of India, you’ve got to visit the `City of Joy’ Kolkata  (previously Calcutta). It is aptly known as the `City of Joy for the sheer exuberance one experiences on being here. A co-existence of diverse cultures and communities, heritage buildings, ancient temples, food and shopping (traditional items, like sari and  jewelry are a speciality) is what makes it so vibrant. The place is the perfect amalgamation of traditional and modern.

Which are the Kolkata travel places  worth seeing is what this blog is about :

A top tourist site of Kolkata without doubt is the Victoria Memorial. The impressive, century old structure, reminds of the British era when Calcutta was the capital of India. There are beautiful, surrounding lawns, where visitors can spend time in. Or take a tour of the insides which is ticketed. A fascinating buggy (horse drawn carriage) just outside can also be enjoyed.

Kolkata

Situated close by in central Kolkata is the Indian Museum, which is the oldest museum in the country. You’ll find an interesting collection of armors, antiques, ornaments, paintings and fossils here.

Another famous landmark associated with the capital of West Bengal is the Howrah bridge, set over the river Hooghly. Admire it from afar, or take a leisurely boat ride on the river flowing below, or pass through the bridge!

Kolkata
Kolkata, West Bengal, India –  A Tram running through the Maidan on a sunny morning at Kolkata, West Bengal, India

To experience the true vibe of Kolkata at it’s own pace, hop onto a tram crisscrossing the streets. Perhaps the slowest tram rides you would have done.  And watch the `City of Joy’ unfold in it’s truest form. A part that cannot be overlooked – congested traffic, crowded streets, urban cacophony, old buildings and humid weather.

Bengali Cuisine & Shopping

Apart from sightseeing there are host of other activities to look forward to when in Kolkata, mainly – food and shopping. A range of shopping options from high end stores and malls to markets and pavement shops, there’s plenty on offer. Gariahat market is quite popular with locals and tourists alike! Shop for the choicest of clothes, homeware, different types of bags, footwear. And don’t forget to bargain. Believe me you’ll end up owning a lot of stuff at a fair price.

Kolkata Afterwards to refresh yourselves, stop at one of the eateries here to relish the delectable food of Kolkata. Mouthwatering puchka, rolls, cutlets, fish pakoda and more to tickle your palate. And a trip to this side of the country is incomplete without having the irresistible Bengali sweets – the spongy `rasgulla’, `sandesha’ and `mishti dohi’.

Park Street is the upscale area, where you’ll find classy restaurants and stores.

There are no end of things to do in Kolkata – from the well known center of learning Shanti Niketan, Science museum, botanic garden, Belur mutt and temple, are some of the other options for tourists to explore.
