Journeying on the Best Luxury Houseboat in Kerala

In the genre of immersive tourism a trip to Kerala’s backwaters scores higher than any other experience. This form of slow travel implies the art of not rushing around when traveling, in an attempt to tick off as many tourist attractions as possible in a short time. Secondly, allowing the world to move just a little slower so that we actually notice it.

Kerala, in South India, better known as God’s Own Country is dotted with a host of beautiful tourist spots — rolling, misty mountains, verdant forests, pristine beaches, and backwaters and is endowed with lush greenery.

Having heard so much about the famous `backwaters’ in Kumarakom, this trip was planned much in anticipation. I wasn’t sure whether it was a hype or not, but the stage was being set for something amazing.

Indulging in a slow travel experience, relaxation, and leisure were the key ingredients of this trip. To immerse fully in the experience at our own unhurried pace, truly absorbing the essence of the place!

The train is the best way to travel on this route till Kottayam in Kerala. Moreover, the convenience of sleeping your way through this night-long journey makes it ideal. We reached Kottayam at 11.30 am which is the nearest station, 10 km away from Kumarakom.

A half-hour cab ride later, bearing the sultry weather, we reached our resort in Kumarakom, nestled on the periphery of the famous Vembanad lake. The lake-facing abode had picturesque views — a massive expanse of water peppered with tiny boats, the shores fringed with swaying palm trees.

Experiencing the Backwaters Aboard a Houseboat

This is something that tourists especially travel for….. a rendezvous in a traditional houseboat, drifting along the tranquil backwaters. You have a choice of opting from 5-hour excursions, to more indulgent overnight stays. Our chosen slot was from 12 noon to evening 5 pm, ensuring a unique daytime experience.

The sheer sight of the majestic vessel docked at the lake was enough to elevate your spirits, a testament to its eco-friendly construction from materials like jute, bamboo, and wood. Its design closely resembling a traditional row boat, lending an air of rustic charm. The interiors too had elegance and comfort interwoven seamlessly, featuring two bedrooms with attached washrooms. Offering a touch of luxury in the lap of nature, on the deck a thoughtfully arranged dining table and chairs provided a scenic setting for serving meals.

Houseboat on Backwaters

Treasured Moments All the Way

Present on board are a chef and the boatman, who accompany guests. The latter know the directions and geography of the area on the tips of their fingers and tourists are reassured that they are in safe hands for the next few hours. The chef’s role is to ensure that everyone is well fed and happy….. providing warm, delicious, freshly cooked local cuisines.

After all the welcome formalities were complete on boarding, the boat navigated through the Vembanad lake, leading into the intricate network of backwaters and canals.

As the boat made its way on the sparkling lake, sometimes through lush greenery, an archway of palm trees or through the endless stretch of verdant paddy fields. We relaxed on the cane chairs on the deck with music and eatables. The pleasant breeze was a balm to the soul, as we savored the beauty of the  surroundings, absorbing the soothing sights.

This was an epitome of immersive travel that I’ve ever experienced. Far from the madding crowds, free of any agendas, or rushing from one destination to the next. Merely being, doing nothing and just appreciating the journey itself!

Within an hour of the commencement of the journey, the houseboat had crossed the lake and entered the backwaters. On both sides of the canal there are narrow pieces of land on which local people build houses and live in them. The main entrance of these houses face the canals and there are no roads or pathways as such. People here use long and narrow boats to travel — which is easier, and faster.

An important component of slow travel is connecting with the culture and environment of the place, and tasting the local cuisine. This is exactly what we did –   and it turned out to be one of the most meaningful travel experiences!

Even though it is the peak summer season in Dubai, with the temperature crossing the 45-degree mark, there is no dearth of tourists in this region of the United Arab Emirates. Malls, hotels, restaurants, tourist spots, and roads are choc-a-block.

An epitome of luxury, affluence, and extravagance, Dubai, exudes an aura that makes you feel like royalty. The grandiose airport with its lavish décor lending a sense of glitz and glamour is the first thing you notice as you exit your flight. Of course, there is also a cutting-edge system that streamlines all the procedures.

This was my second trip as a tourist, and I stayed for a week. Otherwise, this Middle eastern city is usually a stop-over — a transit point to take flights to Europe and America.

One of the seven Emirates that constitute the UAE, Dubai is known for its incredible transformation from a small fishing village, and a trading port into a global city and a major international hub for business, tourism, and luxury. The deserts of Arabia have always attracted me — from the picture-perfect golden sand dunes to culture, food, the famous Arabian dance, and mind-blowing architecture.

I got an opportunity to learn more and delve into the lifestyle of the people of the UAE on this trip; described here in my dubai travel diaries. The rapidly evolving culture is a blend of traditional customs and values, alongside a significant influence of modernization. People in the Emirati community are strongly devout, dress traditionally, and adhere to conventions.

Despite its modernity, Dubai has maintained its cultural heritage. This is apparent in a number of ways :

Traditional markets called the souks give tourists a glimpse into the past and the kind of markets that once existed. Spice, gold, colognes, incense, fabrics, dates, and artifacts are among the things tourists can purchase at these shops.

Experience the distinct heritage of Dubai in the neighborhood of Al Seef. Steeped in history, the vibrant colors of Old Dubai come alive, giving you a chance to discover more about this Arabian city.

You can go shopping, explore the maze-like lanes between the beige-colored buildings, or take a ride on the traditional abra boat at Dubai Creek.

Dubai has morphed into a multicultural society and is home to a diverse population consisting of people from all over the world who come to live and work in the city. A place where you weave a dream and it turns out to be true. This diversity contributes to its cosmopolitan atmosphere.

My Dubai Travel Diary encompasses top tourist destinations, I wouldn’t be listing according to the top-rated attractions, but rather the recently opened ones that are intriguing:

Museum of the Future — I was told, that this fairly new attraction in Dubai is a must-visit and I was absolutely not mistaken. There is a lot of interesting stuff inside in addition to the exteriors, which is eye-catching owing to its distinctive shape and design. Get ready to journey to the year 2071 at the Future Museum. Your journey begins by being escorted in a lift that resembles a spacecraft, taking you to an Orbital space station. This is on the top floor, and from there you can tour the floors below. Tickets priced at 186 dirhams are not very reasonable, but it’s worth it.

Having a photograph clicked with this unique structure in the background is aesthetically pleasing. The highlight of the Future Museum is the viewing deck on the outside, where you get a chance to take photos.

Dubai Frame — Embellishing the skyline is the golden-hued Dubai Frame. This 150-meter-tall rectangular frame-like structure offers breathtaking panoramic views of both old and new Dubai.

It has its two towers connected by a 93-meter-long glass-floored bridge at the top. Walking on this Skydeck is a thrilling experience, as you can see the ground directly below your feet. For me, it was an uncanny feeling, hence people with acrophobia should be cautious.

As you enter you’ll come across an interactive exhibit and gallery portraying the history of Dubai and before exiting a 3-D show on the future vision of this Arabian metropolis. Tickets priced at 52 dirhams are quite affordable.

A time-saving tip — visit the Dubai Frame after seeing the future museum. As these two are located close by, both can be covered within 4 hours.

Dubai Travel Diaries

Burj Khalifa — the tallest skyscraper in the world knows no introduction. Guests can go up to the 124th & 125th floors or 148th and 154th floors. Then there are prime hours and non-prime hours, for which ticket costs are different.

A host of activities revolve around this iconic landmark that shimmers and sparkles in the night. There is the fountain show happening several times a day, just outside the building. The entire area is exquisitely lit up in the night and dazzles with a light show. Having a room with a view of this towering structure from our hotel (Taj Dubai) was like a feather in the cap and was the most fulfilling experience.

Dubai
Author’s Album : Dubai Mall

Dubai Mall — This enormous mall serves as the entrance to Burj Khalifa and is a symbol of luxury and entertainment. You’ll find every high-end luxury brand outlet under its roof. There’s always a lingering fragrance emanating as you walk around, uplifting your spirits.

There’s a wide choice of restaurants and food as well. Finding your way around may not be easy, digital map screens on every floor help tourists navigate. It is not just a shopping center but also features attractions like an ice skating rink, an aquarium, and a waterfall.

Other famous malls in Dubai are the Mall of Emirates and Ibn Batuta.

A string of theme parks, namely, Legoland, Motion Gate, and Aquaventure Water Park are some other attractions to enthrall tourists.

Helpful Tips :

The currency of Dubai is the Dirham (1 Dirham is equivalent to 0.27 dollars and 23 Indian Rupees)

Taxis are a convenient mode of transportation, though a cheaper option would be the metro. Otherwise, Uber and Careem apps are also popular.

To prevent yourself from the scorching heat always carry water, sunscreen, and an umbrella.

Favorite Things to do in Goa

Goa is a ‘happy’ place, always full of surprises, attracting national and international tourists. Not only is it famous for its satiny white beaches and happening nightlife, but also has strikingly beautiful centuries-old churches, heritage architecture, and pretty, natural landscapes adding to its charms. You’ll be treated to a variety of rejuvenating experiences, whether it’s exhilarating water sports at the beach or heritage walks in Old Goa, compelling people to make it a yearly vacation destination!

Here’s a list of some of the favorite things to do in Goa :

Even though it may sound cliché, there is more to Goa than its beaches, let’s begin by exploring that :

Panjim

The capital of Goa is located in north Goa along the banks of the glittering Mandovi river. Where else would you find a spectacular white church, a red and gold temple, and grand ochre-colored mansions crowned with terracotta tiles all sharing a lush, terraced hillside? Panjim manages to retain its colonial-era glory to this day. Goa is one place where you’ll find floating casinos on the river Mandovi, which look resplendent when lit up in the night.

Delve into the lively vibe of heritage, art, music, and food at the Old Latin Quarters – Fountainhas. Walk around the streets to discover houses and buildings painted in vibrant hues, cafes, and art galleries.

Where else would you get to gaze at miles and miles of the endless ocean than in Goa. Though there are a host of beaches in Goa, some of the favorites are as below :

Goa

Calungate

The beach here seems to stretch with uniform coloured shacks and beach umbrellas as far as the eyes can see. Tourists can have a comfortable stay for as long as they wish, on the beach chairs; Order a variety of yummy food and chilled drinks served while you are lounging !

This is where you can indulge in water sports activities such as jet skiing, parasailing, boat ride, and much more. Calangute beach is quite popular with tourists so it can get crowded.

Colva

If you prefer quieter beaches with a laid back vibe then definitely it has to be Colva or Majorda beaches. These are more off-beat spots, have patches of  greenery around and are less crowded. The sound of waves crashing around you and the cool sand between your toes is heavenly. Staying in North Goa and going to these beaches in South Goa is an experience in itself as you traverse through a typical Goanese village Salcate, passing serene Churches, emerald fields, spice plantations and forests.

Goa

Miramar beach – this beach in north Goa though devoid of shacks, eating joints, or water sports activities, is great for spending a casual evening during the sunset hours. Enjoy the natural charm, sunset, and cool breeze,  as you watch tourists’ boats passing by.

KONARK SUN TEMPLE – 9 INTERESTING FACTS

The beautiful mystical temples of India, are a true reflection of a country enriched with an incomparable historical and cultural past and exotic architecture.

One such magnificent gem is the ancient Konark temple in Orissa. Also known as the Sun Temple, dedicated to the Sun God, is located 40 kilometers from another famous temple town, Puri (well known for the Jagannath temple), and is close to the seashores of the Bay of Bengal. The architecture of this 775 year old temple is magnificent, attracting thousands of visitors every day. The tall structure you see at the start is not the actual temple, as some may believe; the main temple is located after that.

HORSE-DRAWN CHARIOT WITH WHEELS AT THE FRONT

The entrance was constructed in the shape of a massive chariot with wheels (30 meters high) drawn by seven horses. This used to be much higher than it is now, though much of it is in ruins. The entire temple is built in the Kalinga or Orissa style and is carved out of stone;  embellished with beautiful artwork and geometrical patterns. A visit to this world heritage site is best appreciated by hiring a guide. During this one-hour tour, tourists learn interesting facts about that era plus the historical and religious significance of the temple.

Sun Temple Konark

Mandapa

The intricate stone carvings all around depict 13th-century lifestyle and culture, bearing an uncanny resemblance to modern-day living. Motifs of deities, royalty, trees, and animals (notably giraffes, elephants, and serpents) are equally captivating.

MAIN TEMPLE

At the stairs leading to the main temple a massive, stone figure of a lion welcomes visitors, symbolising power. While on the adjacent side, there is an elephant sculpture depicting war. Currently, the main temple (or the `mandapa’) is inaccessible to the general public due to the ongoing restoration work, however, it would be open to visitors in the near future. On the top of the structure, you can see the exquisite sculpture of the Sun God in green stone.

Sundial Wheel
Konark Sun Temple is a 13th-century CE sun temple at Konark in Puri on the coastline of Odisha,

The wheels are not only pieces of art with fine engraved work, but also have the unique feature of a sun clock. Your guide will show you how this remarkable sundial works, displaying precise time with the movement of the sun’s rays.

Within the precincts of the temple, there is a museum also that provides information and details about the temple.

An important tip when visiting the Konark Sun temple is to carry drinking water and wear sunglasses /cap as it becomes quite hot and sunny. Within the complex, there is a decent restaurant that serves food.

Finally, on your return, it is worth stopping at the pristine beach, layered with velvety sand, which surprisingly is quite clean.

KOLKATA TRAVEL PLACES

If you wish to feel the real essence of India, you’ve got to visit the `City of Joy’ Kolkata  (previously Calcutta). It is aptly known as the `City of Joy for the sheer exuberance one experiences on being here. A co-existence of diverse cultures and communities, heritage buildings, ancient temples, food and shopping (traditional items, like sari and  jewelry are a speciality) is what makes it so vibrant. The place is the perfect amalgamation of traditional and modern.

Which are the Kolkata travel places  worth seeing is what this blog is about :

A top tourist site of Kolkata without doubt is the Victoria Memorial. The impressive, century old structure, reminds of the British era when Calcutta was the capital of India. There are beautiful, surrounding lawns, where visitors can spend time in. Or take a tour of the insides which is ticketed. A fascinating buggy (horse drawn carriage) just outside can also be enjoyed.

Kolkata

Situated close by in central Kolkata is the Indian Museum, which is the oldest museum in the country. You’ll find an interesting collection of armors, antiques, ornaments, paintings and fossils here.

Another famous landmark associated with the capital of West Bengal is the Howrah bridge, set over the river Hooghly. Admire it from afar, or take a leisurely boat ride on the river flowing below, or pass through the bridge!

Kolkata
Kolkata, West Bengal, India –  A Tram running through the Maidan on a sunny morning at Kolkata, West Bengal, India

To experience the true vibe of Kolkata at it’s own pace, hop onto a tram crisscrossing the streets. Perhaps the slowest tram rides you would have done.  And watch the `City of Joy’ unfold in it’s truest form. A part that cannot be overlooked – congested traffic, crowded streets, urban cacophony, old buildings and humid weather.

Bengali Cuisine & Shopping

Apart from sightseeing there are host of other activities to look forward to when in Kolkata, mainly – food and shopping. A range of shopping options from high end stores and malls to markets and pavement shops, there’s plenty on offer. Gariahat market is quite popular with locals and tourists alike! Shop for the choicest of clothes, homeware, different types of bags, footwear. And don’t forget to bargain. Believe me you’ll end up owning a lot of stuff at a fair price.

Kolkata Afterwards to refresh yourselves, stop at one of the eateries here to relish the delectable food of Kolkata. Mouthwatering puchka, rolls, cutlets, fish pakoda and more to tickle your palate. And a trip to this side of the country is incomplete without having the irresistible Bengali sweets – the spongy `rasgulla’, `sandesha’ and `mishti dohi’.

Park Street is the upscale area, where you’ll find classy restaurants and stores.

There are no end of things to do in Kolkata – from the well known center of learning Shanti Niketan, Science museum, botanic garden, Belur mutt and temple, are some of the other options for tourists to explore.

Top 5 Things to do in Munnar for a Fulfilling Experience

My previous blog on Munnar was about the main tourist attractions in this well-known hill station of Kerala. This blog is about some other spots of Munnar which treat you with beautiful sceneries, are less crowded and ensure a fulfilling experience of this mountain escape. Moreover, an opportunity to explore around, that leave everlasting impressions.

Adventurous Journey Through Lofty Mountains and Forests

A journey to the hills of Munnar are nothing less than a rollercoaster ride. Travelers planning a trip must be prepared for a four-hour road journey, that takes them through thick forests, and precarious mountain bends. A word of warning – the curvaceous route may leave you with a bout of motion sickness; and the best way to overcome that is to grab the front seat of the vehicle. In case, that is not possible then look straight ahead, fixing your gaze on the road ahead and not from the sides of the window. Though, thankfully the discomfort is temporary. On reaching the destination, you’ll forget all your woes and find yourself in the most magical destination.

Munnar

The views on the way are no less impressive as you maneuver your way through Kerala’s protected wildlife reserves and dense forests. This area is home to a range of animals and birds and is heavily guarded. Vehicles coming from outside the state are stopped at the check post before allowing entry.

If you’ve been to Munnar before, you’ll realize that the gushing waterfalls and lakes may no longer what they used to be, having shrunk in number and size to some extent. Fortunately, the greenery and foliage is intact and this hill getaway is as attractive as before, giving tourists joyful experiences and relaxation.

Here are my chosen list of top 5 things to do in Munnar for a fulfilling experience:

ATTUKADU WATERFALLS

You’ll be stunned by these waterfalls cascading down into the valley, as you set eyes on them from atop the tea gardens. A silvery stream ensconced in an emerald cushion! This is the halting point for tourists, for taking in the magnificent views and clicking photographs. And, for those who are unfamiliar with the area, don’t head back from here yet. Walking further on the path going downhill for 2 kms into the valley you’ll reach the base of the falls. You can enjoy the falls closely, though it may not be as impressive from here. This is an ideal place for trekking enthusiasts as well!! At this juncture, a tea break is what trekkers and holiday makers need. Surprisingly, that’s what you’ll find across the bridge – a cute café in the wilderness.

Munnar

CHENGULAM  – Top 5 Things to do in Munnar for a Fulfilling Experience

Chengulam dam and lake – though not as famous as the Madupetty dam, it’s a highly recommended place on my list as it is less crowded and more serene. Lying in the valley, descend to the tranquil lake to enjoy a boat ride and panoramic views of the surrounding jungles and mountains.  A relaxing time in the park in the front, will surely raise your spirits at the end.

Munnar

POTHAMEDU & SUNSET VIEWPOINT

Munnar has several breath-taking viewing points, offering excellent views of the rolling hills, verdant forests, tea plantations through floating clouds. Pothamedu being one of my favorites.  Splendid views of the plantations, hills and valley slipping in and out of mist, the backdrop of abundant greenery, the fresh mountain air make it an ideal location for mountain walks and treks.

Sunset Point – as the name suggests, it’s ideal to be here at sunset, and revel in the captivating phenomenon.

Munnar

Tourists will be delighted to discover a string of such idyllic spots dotting the landscape of Munnar. Further up, on the way to the highest mountain Anamudi, as you cross Rajamala, there are few famous points worth exploring. The region has multiple tea, coffee, spice estates. A green velvet blanket covering the mountains and the valleys, enveloped in mist. These are open to tourists who are free to walk in-between, admiring the scenery and clicking pictures.

HYDEL PARK

A beautiful park, with well-manicured lawns, a fine collection of flora and fauna, in the midst of this luxuriant hill station goes by the name of Hydel Park. A placid stream, an aquarium and a zip line for the adventurous are other attractions here.

Another activity that tourists may look forward to in the future is hot air balloon tour . It has been recently introduced, though still not completely operational.

A Tea Break Worth Taking

Passing through the twist and turns of mountain roads, you are sure to come across tea and snack stalls at the bends. It is enticing for the weary traveler to stop here for tea break in between sightseeing expeditions. The cool weather is ideal to sip a steaming cup of tea/ coffee and relish hot snacks like roasted corn or lip smacking maggi. A chance to enjoy your stay from a different perspective.

Best Tourist Places in Prayagraj
Glancing at the glorious history of Allahabad, the city was the hub of political activities in pre-independence era. During this time it rose to prominence as an important center for the freedom movement. Post-independence had the honour of giving the nation highest number of Prime Ministers (Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Gulzarilal Nanda to name a few) . Deeply embedded in religion, spirituality and history, Allahabad or present day Prayagraj is the site of the holy Sangam – the meeting point of the river Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati.

From its ancient name of Prayag to Allahabad and recently  Prayagraj, the place has seen positive changes as well lately. Though for me it remains Allahabad – a city where I belong to and trace back my roots to.

So, what are the best tourist places in Prayagraj, let’s find out from this blog:
Triveni Sangam –   is the confluence of three rivers and is an important spiritual spot of India. A country where rivers are highly revered. Triveni Sangam rules the roost of being the top tourist site of Allahabad. You can feel the spiritual vibe of Sangam as you get onto a boat to reach it midstream.  A divine atmosphere pervades here, that is inexplicable. You have to experience it to know. You’re tempted to take a dip in the sacred waters, which as per belief is highly auspicious.
Prayagraj has the privilege of holding the largest religious congregation the `Kumbh mela’ on the banks of the river Ganges. Organised every year between January to March. Saints, sadhus and religious groups, come together, as do lakhs of people from all walks of life to be a part of this largest spiritual gathering on earth. For tourist who wish to have a more immersive experience and to soak in the spirituality, can even reserve luxury tents for a stay

Best Tourist Places in Prayagraj

Anand Bhawan – the ancestral residence of the Nehru-Gandhi family known as Anand Bhawan is another well known tourist spot of Allahabad.  It was later converted into a museum showcasing their lives; glimpses and interesting facts about India’s freedom movement are of interest to visitors. There is also a Planetarium in the vicinity, shows scheduled at fixed timings.

Best Tourist Places in Prayagraj

Allahabad Fort – as you sail along the river, you’ll have eye catching views of the magnificent fort.  The fort is under the control of the army, therefore, only one part of this historical site is accessible to the public. A temple and an immortal tree significant in Hindu mythology – the Akshay vat, is what you’ll find inside.
There’s a famous Hanuman temple nearby, having the deity in a reclining position, is worth a visit.
Best Tourist Places Allahabad

Some other facts about Allahabad – the Allahabad University counted as one of the top educational institutions in the country has been the alma mater of well-known personalities of the country. The list boasts of poets, writers, scholars, academicians, and politicians. The institution has an impressive structure, with separate arts and science faculties.

If you browse the internet for tourist spots in Allahabad, you’re sure to find the names of Alfred Park and museum on the list. Alfred Park also known as Azad Park, has association with our freedom movement. Next to this is the Allahabad Museum for those interested in history.

Apart from sightseeing, for all sorts of shopping and gastronomical experiences M.G. marg is the place to go to. It is popularly known as Civil Lines. This is the upscale shopping arena of Allahabad, where you will get a range of dining options to choose from. An unhurried, casual pace of existence is the essence of Allahabad, you can reach the farthest end of the town in less than an hour.

Though Allahabad being a less popular tourist destination of Uttar Pradesh or perhaps is not much in the limelight compared to Varanasi, Agra or Lucknow, yet it’s worth a visit. And since Varanasi is just 120 kms away, it’s worthwhile  to plan a combined trip to these two holy cities.

Places to visit in Pondicherry in a day

A beach holiday in India is not quite what we see in movies, web series or advertisements. Glamorous surrounding with colorful umbrellas and beach decks, characters in stylish swim wear, surf board in hand! You may not find all that, however, what’s offered in abundance are the bounties of nature – the vast ocean, enchanting views, balmy breeze and the company of loved ones.

ORIENTATION

Pondicherry itself is not exactly a beach holiday, as it lies against a rocky seafront of the Coromandel coast. The place is an amalgamation of a beach destination peppered with a rich history and culture, of French colonies and the famous Aurobindo Ashram.

The best way to reach Pondicherry is by road, as it is a four hours drive from Chennai and seven hours from Bangalore.

An intermingling of French and Tamil culture is visible in the unique architecture of some of the houses in Puducherry (another name for Pondicherry). You’ll find this fusion in the cuisine also. There are of course the famous French colonies consisting of French designed homes and cafes.

Pondicherry

For tourists staying for a day, here are the top places to visit in Pondicherry in a day :

Promenade Beach

The beaches in the city stretch from the Puducherry main beach, to the  Rock beach and the Promenade beach. As mentioned earlier the coastline of Pondicherry is rocky, so don’t expect to find sandy expanses where you can do a whole series of activities. What you will surely get are fabulous views from the seaside promenade .

Promenade Beach Pondicherry

For best experiences visitors can walk along the boulevard, adjacent to the ocean, admiring the sights around. As traffic is not allowed here, you will be undisturbed by the noise and pollution of automobiles. Though only one or two sea facing cafes are there, you can choose to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee and snacks, watching the frothy waves dash against the rocky shore.

For sandy beach experiences – the three main beaches Paradise, Quiet and Serenity, lie not in Pondicherry itself, but about 12-15 kms away.

Paradise Beach

To reach Paradise beach take the ferry down the charming Chunnambar river. Boat services are available that  pick up tourist from the Chunnambar park lying 8 kms south of the city. Paradise beach is basically an island, comprising of a giant sandbar between the river and the sea. People spend few hours on this gorgeous beach and then return by evening to the mainland. There is nothing much to do here in the nights, just basic facilities and one or two of not very good restaurants.

Paradise beach Pondicherry

OTHER BEACHES

The Serenity and Quiet beaches are true to thier names, are nice beaches. These being closer to Auroville, hence frequented more by foreigners and Aurovillans. Though also attract hordes of tourists for their quiet appeal.

If you’re in Pondicherry just for a day, I would advice tourists to visit the Aurobindo ashram in the afternoon. It’s sweltering during this time and it’s best to stay indoors. Later you can head to Auroville and the beaches nearby. Set aside the morning hours for the Paradise and Promenade beach.

Aurobindo Ashram

Aurobindo ashram, situated on the Rue de la Marine is worth visiting. The world-renowned ashram has the relics of the great saint from Bengal Sri Aurobindo and the French Mother. They were responsible for the creation of Auroville, giving Puducherry the international character that it now enjoys.

It feels so peaceful visiting the ashram. It’s central courtyard decked up with the most exotic flowers. Absolute silence is maintained and people sit in this serene ambience and meditate.

Auroville Pondicherry

A universal symbol of harmony, peace and freedom, Auroville is 14 kms from Pondicherry. People from all over the world have made this experimental township their home. The impressive golden-dome like structure that comes into sight from far is the `Matri mandir’.  It’s a one km walk from the main entrance, where visitors need to collect their free passes. If you wish to visit  this  center of serenity and meditation from inside there are fixed timings, and you need to pre-book 3-4 days in advance.

Though Pondicherry has many more sight-seeing spots, all cannot be covered in one day. This post `Places to visit in Pondicherry in a day’  prioritizes the best and must see places.

Let’s take a step forward in adopting eco-tourism, here’s my article on sustainable travel and all that you need to know.

What Munnar is Famous for ?

A country as diverse as India, not just culturally but geographically too, has many options for a holiday – from mountains to beaches, forests, heritage sites, ancient cities and sacred places.

The hills of South India have the benefit of having a climate that is just moderately cold and luckily not freezing . Temperatures rarely falling below sub-zero levels, which is quite bearable as compared to mountain escapes of the north. This is the reason why tourists enjoy  a hassle free vacation in these salubrious surroundings without the burden of carrying heavy woolens or layering themselves.

WWhat Munnar is famous for

Orientation

Munnar, situated in the southern most Indian state of Kerala had for long been the states best kept secrets. Gradually it has risen into prominence as a top hill stations of South India. Located in Kerela’s Idukki district, in the Western Ghats, the verdant landscape of Munnar is a highly recommended holiday destination. Dotted with several streams and  gushing waterfalls, which are full of fish like trout, fishing is a  favorite pastime, as well as occupation here. Endless lush green plantations on the hilly terrain soothes your eyes. The scenic beauty of Munnar is mesmerizing, making it an unmissable place.

Apart from plantation tours (tea, spices, rubber) and visit to tea factories, you can sight the rare mountain goat – the Nilgiri tahr found specifically here.

What Munnar is Famous for

Exploring Around

It’s a nice idea to explore around on a bicycle, that are easily available on rent. For tea aficionados, there are plenty of tea factories to head to. Tata tea owns more than two dozen factories in Munnar. You can obtain permission to visit them by contacting their regional office.

Eravikulam National park is the place to spot the Nilgiri tahr, and this is what Munnar is famous for. As these are fast becoming extinct, this park is a protected area. Tourists are permitted up to a certain point, i.e., Rajamalai; plastic is not allowed inside. The southern portion of this 97 square kilometers park boasts of having South India’s highest peak, Anamudi (2695 m). A nice place for those who look forward to trekking.

What Munnar is Famous for

As with most hill stations, Munnar too has a lake named Mattupetty, 13 kms from the main town. Boating facilities are offered here, Speed boat ride is what you should to do here. An easy way to get around the town is by auto-rickshaw. It’s a quick mode of transport in Munnar.

After nightfall, this queen of the mountains become exceptionally quiet!  You cannot venture outside as it is deserted and there’s nothing much to do. Hence, it is advised to stay in a hotel where they have indoor games. Most of the top hotels organize activities for guests – games or traditional Kathakali dance performances.

Another  way to spend the evenings is to cozy up with a hot drink, gazing at the star-lit night. Reveling in the sounds of nocturnal creatures from your room overlooking the forest and valley .

Lucknow Travel – Uttar Pradesh India

The `City of Nawabs’ as it was once known as, Lucknow the capital of Uttar Pradesh, has great historical and cultural significance. It was the seat of royalty both – Hindu and Mughal, characterized by  an aristocratic lifestyle, architectural heritage, and famous awadhi cuisine. Having spent a considerable part of my earlier years in this part of the country, I have seen it grow over the years into a highly developed metro. Believed to be the city of fine behavior and etiquette (tehzeeb in urdu), Lucknow is the best combination of the ancient and modern. So, there is Old Lucknow with it’s ancient monuments and famous streets for shopping and eating (mostly in Aminadab and Chowk) and new Lucknow which has come up well in recent years.

Among the most popular heritage sites in the city is the Imam Bara –  the Bara and Chota Imam Bara

Lucknow Travel

Bara Imam bara

Built by Nawab Asaf-ud-daula in 1784, the architecture of the impressive structure is in the Mughal style. There’s  also has a mosque, numerous courtyards and gateways within its precincts. The main hall of the Bara Imambara is supposed to be the largest arched halls in the world. Standing steady for centuries without any ceiling support of beams or pillars. Another fascinating thing to be seen here is the `Bhulbhulaiya’ . Once inside this maze of countless  labyrinthine passages connected by identical doorways, it is impossible to come out without getting lost! There are more than a thousand entry points though only one exit. Hence, it is advisable to take the services of a guide with you.

Chota Imambara – the finely sculpted exteriors and the beautiful interiors adorned with chandeliers and lights in various hues is just as impressive. It is situated to the west of the Bara Imambara.

Rumi Darwaza – another iconic landmark of Lucknow is the Rumi Darwaza. This exquisitely carved archway lying close to  the  Bara Imambara, rises to a height of 60 feet and has a similar Mughal design.

Jama Masjid

The unique feature of this mosque is it’s architecture which is a blend of Hindu and Muslim style. That’s what attracts tourists. Built by the third Nawab of Awadh (old name of Lucknow) Mohammad Ali Shah in 1845, the mosque is made of bricks and plastered with lime. It has extraordinary carvings, motifs and arches!

Lucknow Zoo –  for animal lovers, Lucknow Zoo is quite popular, having a great variety of animals.

Must included on our visits were jaunts to Hazratganj , the posh marketplace of Lucknow. Famous for its shopping and culinary experience! From high-end boutique stores, restaurants, movie theatres to street markets selling fashionable clothes, jewelry, footwear, and accessories.

Lucknow Travel

Recently, counted as the fastest growing city in India, new additions to the tourist spots of Lucknow are the Ambedkar park and Gomti river marine drive. These are worth visiting. Of course,  there are numerous malls and parks where you can spend time in.

Food of Lucknow

The highlight of a trip to Lucknow entails savoring its specialty Mughlai cuisine – the lip smacking  authentic kebabs and biriyani. The line up of old time eateries in the more congested Chowk area are quite famous. These have been there since many decades. Here you’ll find the best sweet shops for `kulfi’ and `malai paan’ as well. Not just for the meat lovers, Lucknow chats and savories’ are also a must have. Royal Café in Hazratganj is a prominent restaurant, try their `basket chat’.

Basket chat

A lesser known fact about Lucknow is that it’s a treasure house of talent. Whether it be in the skills of cooking, or the fine embroidery work chikankari to poetry, music and dance forms like kathak.

Climate & Best Time to Go

Summers are from April to June, when temperatures can soar up to 43 degrees .

The best time to plan a trip to Uttar Pradesh is between July to October where the temperatures are moderate. July, August is the rainy season.
