A two-day stay in Geneva was initially planned as the final stop on my European tour before heading home. Little did I realize, Geneva offers so much more, given its strategic location—bordering France and just a short distance from Italy! This  makes it an ideal base for tourists to embark on scenic day trips to nearby picturesque destinations, which I’ll delve into later in the blog.

This cosmopolitan Swiss city is heavily influenced by its French neighbor, evident in both its language and cuisine. So let’s explore a few of Geneva’s gems:

Lake Geneva & It’s Surroundings

A beautiful, pristine water body often becomes the heart of any place, drawing people like a magnet and buzzing with activity. Lake Geneva is no exception—it is the pulse of the city where tourists flock.

Set against the stunning backdrop of the Alps, there are a host of things to do here. There’s the giant wheel taking you to dizzying heights, peaceful boat rides on the lake surrounded by scenic views. Or as part of your exploration, you can board a train that meanders along the pretty lake, taking you through lush parks and forests.

Picture From My Album
Picture From My Album
And you can’t miss the famous fountain on Lake Geneva—the iconic Jet d’Eau is unique and one of the tallest in the world. Definitely worth checking out!

With an efficient and cheap bus system, tourists can easily travel within and the outskirts of Geneva at affordable prices. The best part? You’ll get to soak in the views outside along the way, making your journey as enjoyable as the destination itself.

Palais Des Nations

Geneva is counted as an important global center of historical significance, especially with the UN headquarters located here. It was a fabulous feeling to stand in front of this hub of world peace. I would have loved to take the guided tour inside the UN office (known as the Palace of Nations), but tickets were sold out, so missed out on that experience.

If you are staying longer in Geneva, then taking a trip to the nearby Alp mountain region is worth considering.

One fantastic option is Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, a popular ski resort situated in the French Alps at the junction of France, Switzerland, and Italy. It’s just an hour’s journey by train and bus from Geneva, making it a quick and rewarding day trip.

It was a perfect two day stay in Geneva that was a fulfilling experience !

Gothenburg, the port town of Sweden, with its old world charm is worth spending 2-3 days in. A destination that allows a slow, unhurried pace of existence, Gothenburg or `Goteborg’ in Swedish is the largest port of the Nordic countries. And that’s how my stay at this archipelago was – relaxed and unhurried!

Gothenburg is closer to Sweden’s nature than any other city, with its plethora of parks and green spaces. Experiencing the real feel of life during the vibrant, summer season, as locals were out and about was interesting. From enjoying get-togethers in parks, to nature walks, sunbathing near the river, lingering at cafes, or dining late into the night seemed to be the norm.

Opting For Train Travel Wherever Possible

Train journeys have their own charm, and I prefer traveling by this efficient mode of transportation as much as possible when in Europe. What better way to travel from Oslo to Gottenburg than by a super fast express that was  so quick and convenient.

Gothenborg, Sweden

Art, Culture & History

Contemplating  whether to visit the Museum of Art or simply hop onto a tram and admire things around, I chose the former, and was happy that I did it. The art museum featuring masterpieces and art-work by well known artists was definitely worth exploring.

After the museum tour, which took about two hours, we were famished, but couldn’t locate any eateries nearby. And that’s when the handy digital device – the mobile phone came to our rescue !

Isn’t it amazing how technology helps us?

You can search for anything at the touch of a button and get the answers instantly. A quick online search, led us to a nearby restaurant just 200 meters away, where we ate a scrumptious lunch.

Gothenborg Sweden
Waterfront, Gothenborg Port

The hotel room where I stayed, turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Located on a higher floor, it was comfortable and plush, offering sweeping views of the cityscape, that enhanced the overall experience. The combination of plush amenities and stunning vistas made for a fine stay.

The people of Sweden have a profound connection with nature. Whenever the weather permits (which is not often due to the extended winter and snowy seasons from October to April), people flock to the outdoors . The short summers provide the perfect opportunity for Swedes to slow down, relish the beauty of their surroundings, and savor the joy of being in the present moment.

The Compact Layout of Gothenburg Makes It Easy To Explore On Foot

With no fixed agenda, we strolled around in the central area near the river `Gota Alv’, absorbing the vibe of the place, getting into shopping areas, lanes, and by-lanes. It was refreshing, especially since it wasn’t raining! Everything was bathed in golden sunshine, accompanied by fresh air and pleasant weather.

Gothenborg, Sweden
Riverside Gothenborg

A short while later, and without realizing it, found ourselves in front of the Botanic Gardens.  Though, had not planned a trip to Europe’s largest and most prominent gardens,  decided to go inside as we were already there. However, couldn’t stay long as had another plan – to visit Gothenburg port. So we left early as wanted to reach the waterfront before sunset.

The port is an important landmark of the city, where you can see the grand, Swedish ship `Gotheburg’. A walk along the harborside and the `Gulbergskajen’ pier offers picturesque views. Ending the last day of our stay in Goteborg in this way, sitting at the water’s edge, admiring different types of fascinating ships and boats docked there, and the cool, fresh breeze was rejuvenating.

Being in one of the happiest places in the world, Norway, took me on a journey of discovery. I was grateful for such an opportunity,  that  few people get to experience.  Oslo and other `Scandic’ countries had been on my bucket list and finally I was all set to explore them.

Previously, Norway’s capital served as a stop-over destination en route to Tromso, famous for the northern lights. This time I stayed as a tourist.

The tag of being one of the happiest places was evident from the moment my trip began on the flight to Oslo.  An hour into the seven-hour long flight, conversations that started as  murmurs, transformed into loud jovial chatter at high decibels . I could see people leaving their seats, to stand on the sides wherever there was space, forming small groups and talking.  This kind of camaraderie on an aircraft is seldom seen, and  it was infectious !

Oslo Travel

Radiant Summers of Norway : Natural Elixir For Happiness

It is not without a reason that Norway tops the list of happiest countries. Geographically, countries closer to the arctic circle are endowed with radiant sunshine for almost 20 hours in a day in summers.

Does’nt a bright and sunny weather work wonders for the mood , acting as a balm to the soul?

For someone who has never witnessed such a phenomenon, seeing the last rays of the sun disappearing over the horizon as late as 10.45 pm is fascinating…… and that surprisingly did’nt end there! A few hours later, was woken up at 3.30 am to the first rays of the sun just seeping in. It was absolutely incredible!!

These `endless’ days, not only inspire a sense of boundless energy, but apparently stretch the  time for sightseeing to nearly 9-10 hours!

Last year, from the airport, I could see snow in the surrounding areas, leading me to have the impression that Oslo would be a quaint, snow covered European city.

But it was April beginning then.

Now it was the summer season, and Oslo turned out to be a modern, green city, with pleasant weather, and clear, blue skies.

The locals were making the most of it – sunbathing, having picnics in the beautiful, verdant parks, wearing their coolest summer outfits. Travelers like me, who are not familiar with this type of climate, found it not that warm, though it was definitely pleasant! I couldn’t have possibly managed without a jacket during the evenings.

Oslo Travel

While the remarkable Medieval buildings or Gothic architecture (that other European countries are famous for) are missing in Oslo, it  offers several other tourist attractions, worth mentioning, notable being :

The Nobel Peace Center – an intimate museum in the heart of Oslo, presenting the history of the Nobel Peace Prize through exciting exhibitions and events.

Besides, there are several museums where you can experience everything from historical treasures to world class art. Prominent among them is the Vikings Museum, which has an exquisite collection of archaeological objects from the Vikings Age, the Middle Ages, and the Stone Age upto recent times.

There’s also a Natural History Museum worth visiting.

The Opera House – is Norway’s largest music and performing arts institution. It’s uniquely designed structure stands out. Visitors can walk on the sloping roof or continue into the beautiful, open foyer.

A Serene Getaway On Oslo’s Fjords

One of the highlights of this part of Norway are the surrounding fjords; cruising on these is an unmissable activity. Various types of fjord sightseeing cruises are available from the pier for tourists to choose from. Tickets can be easily purchased from the counters there itself.

The one that we took was a two-hour classic tour, passing the fortress, Opera House, and idyllic islands with cute summer houses. The views as you sail on the expansive, deep blue waters, between emerald, rolling hills are breath-taking.

Oslo Travel

We enjoyed tram journeys that are such an integral part of the city, connecting to the suburbs. Being in a mood for adventure, one such ride took us to the last stop, where we got down and found ourselves in the midst of a picture perfect forest,  a placid lake and a cluster of pretty cottages. Sights like these are so refreshing, uplifting our spirits.

More than half of Oslo is covered by forests and parks, making it a lush green carpet during the summer.  In  winter, this green landscape transforms into a snowy winter wonderland, ideal for skiing and other winter activities.

Oslo Travel

I found some of the best eateries, cafes along the harbour promenade, with outdoor seating and patios. Not only was the decor impressive, the food was also fresh and delectable. You’ll get all types of fresh fish, salmon, pizza, and salads.

The photos shared in this blog are from my album.

If you are visiting that part of Europe that is carbon neutral and scores high on sustainability, you’ll be rewarded with a perfect, clean, and green getaway like Copenhagen. Copenhagen is a beautiful, bike-friendly city with a rich history and culture. There’s something for everyone here. From world-class museums and art galleries, centuries-old castles and palaces, and delicious food, to charming shops, cafes, and parks.

What to See in Copenhagen

For history buffs  Christianborg Palace and the Rosenberg Castle would be fascinating, giving a walkthrough the lives of Danish royalty. You may feel like skipping them if you’re there for a short time, but these grand places are worth a visit. The center of the Danish Parliament, the Christianborg Palace may not have attractive exteriors, and you may not be much impressed. But once you step inside you’ll find the opulent interiors awe-inspiring.

Christianborg Palace

The most famous touristy spot of Copenhagen is Nyhaven. Once a 17th-century fishing village, is now a dazzling waterfront entertainment zone, with a string of cafes, restaurants, and brightly painted houses. You’ll also come across centuries-old iconic wooden ships at Nyhaven. It’s a pleasure to walk beside the canal and enjoy the views. There are coffee shops with fireplaces that provide hot drinks and offer a haven from the chilly winds outside. Must try is the crispy, layered Danish pastry, which is delicious.

The Little Mermaid – based on a fairy tale written by a Danish author, this bronze statue of the little mermaid sitting on a rock is situated by the waterside at the Langelinie promenade. This is a great photo spot full of tourists.

Another Copenhagen highlight is a guided boat tour of the canal. Find significant historical landmarks on this tour as the guide describes them, while admiring the beauty and listening to engrossing tales from the past. It was interesting to know that the author of the famous story the `Ugly Duckling was a resident of Copenhagen too.

Several modern and historic museums dot the city. We decided on the Design museum which had numerous masterpieces on display.

Copenhagen

Getting around is quite easy in the capital of Denmark.  Though there are various modes of transport, like, metro, bus, cab, or even ferry, using a bike is common. Specific tracks on the sides of roads, make it so convenient for cycling. It not just saves fuel but keeps the surroundings free of carbon emissions. Walking around on foot appeals to some as well.

Something that is unpredictable in Copenhagen, like most of Europe is the weather. On the day we arrived it was bright and sunny and as luck would have it, the following day there were incessant rains. Our canal trip was therefore interrupted by showers, but thankfully the boat had a glass roof so we could still take in the scenery.

Considering the erratic weather having raincoats and umbrellas with you is a necessity. Even though it may mean hauling heavier bags, it is preferable than getting drenched in the midst of your vacation.

Currency : Danish Krone

Staying at the centrally located Mayfair Hotel was a pleasant experience. Not only are the rooms comfortable, the food and ambiance is nice as well. As much as we wanted to, because of a shortage of time, missed going to the famous Tivoli Gardens.

Best Places to visit in Brussels

Like how Europe’s old-world charm and modern, chic appeal seamlessly coexist? Your top destination on your bucket list should be Brussels, the capital of Belgium. Not only is Brussels medieval architecture combined with the vibrancy of a metropolitan city attractive, but there is also plenty to do here.

Aside from being famous for waffles, and chocolates, perhaps few would be knowing that Brussels is where cartoon characters like Tintin, Asterix, and Smurf originated. So, if you are a fan of these it would be the ultimate experience. Colourful scenes out of these comic strips brighten up so many dull corners in the city.

The aromas emanating from streets lined with waffle joints draw you like a moth to the flame. Gorge on these delectable, crispy treats; a variety of mouth-watering toppings to select from – fluffy whipped cream, strawberries, blueberries, or chocolate. Knowing that they are not likely to get the chance of having authentic Belgian waffles any time soon, tourists get their fill as long as they are there, often.

And is it possible for the chocolate capital of the world, to be minus a tourist attraction related to it? So, you have a famous chocolate museum, which is one of the best places to visit in Brussels. Where you can participate in chocolate making and tasting these tantalizing delights as well.

Best Places Brussels

Get the most of Brussels

The best way to enjoy the vibe of Brussels is to wander aimlessly, admiring the glorious city, slip into the by-lanes, gazing at the well-maintained authentic structures. After the long walks, sit back and replenish yourselves at any of the grand cafes that have grown in popularity over the years. The trend of having seating arrangements outside the cafe have gained momentum and are ideal spots to lounge, while taking in the views around.

Best Places to visit in Brussels

With brick-lined sidewalks and a collection of Colonial, Federal, and Victorian-style buildings, Brussels is the ideal destination for design & architecture buffs. On the pinnacle is the Grand Palace and is where tourists flock to first.

Tall Gothic and Baroque facades of elaborately crafted guild houses encircle Brussels’ biggest plaza, transporting you back in time. It’s the most glorious 360-degree view of Europe’s perfectly preserved, ostentatious square, which leaves people impressed. Craning up your neck, you’ll find the most realistic & intricately carved statues of divine beings, nobles, saints, and allegorical figurines gazing from rooftops.

Best Places Brussels

Having retained the allure of the prehistoric age is something that unites Europe as a whole and keeps the continent harmonious. Where you can catch a glimpse of their illustrious past and where modern and medieval buildings coexist. Additionally, Brussels has a significant role in modern politics. The European Parliament is headquartered here, and it serves as the main center for the European Union.

Other Attractions

Easily the most recognizable feature of Brussels is the Atomium. The striking structure with its unique design made in the form of a molecule is worth a visit once. Not just for the exteriors but especially the aerial views are breathtaking.

Day trips from Brussels to nearby towns like Antwerp and Bruges, completes tourists trip to Belgium and makes the experience wholesome.

A Guide to Tromso Norway

Arriving at Tromso Airport, you are greeted with breathtaking views of the snow-covered, vegetated environment. And this is just the beginning of an unforgettable holiday in this Norwegian fairytale hamlet. Tromso makes the most of its setting and is the ideal place for winter sports as it is perpetually covered with snow. It’s not uncommon to see travelers at the airport hauling massive ski equipments. Close to the Arctic Circle, this island offers a variety of activities. Tourists use it as a base to explore the nearby scenic Nordic areas consisting of fjords, glaciers, and of course the northern lights.

Things to do

Venturing out on a boat and sailing on the picturesque Norwegian Sea is a common activity for visitors to Tromso. They can select from an option of cruise or boat tour – from luxury cruises, whale watching, fishing tours or merely observe the beauty of the Arctic landscape. Experience the Nordic coastline as the cruise passes through straits, fjords and snow-covered mountains.

Tromso

Taking the Fiellheisen cable car to the Storsteinen mountain ledge is a well-liked activity in Tromso. Even though it’s a short trip to the top, on offer are breathtaking views that are unmissable. A cozy café completes your trip here. This is also a popular spot for skiing.

Tromso has the benefit of later sunsets and longer daylight hours. So you’ll have more time for sightseeing and exploring while you’re in the country of the midnight sun. In fact, it is fascinating to learn that throughout the summer, the sun never sets in this region, rather lingers above the horizon all day long.

Tromso

No matter where in the world you are traveling from, be sure to pack clothing for extremely cold weather.  Before leaving the hotel, it’s best to be dressed in layers to manage the sub-zero temperatures and icy winds.

In a world full of endless possibilities, isn’t the natural phenomenon of the northern lights truly amazing? These lights, seen in the cold, dark skies of the far north ( countries around the Arctic circle, namely, Norway, Sweden, and parts of Iceland) illuminate the sky with an array of colors, from soft pastels to vibrant hues of green, pink, and purple. Sometimes moving slowly like clouds, sometimes in streaks. Reminding us of never losing our sense of wonder, hope, and awe and of life’s surprises! Read this blog, `The Best Place to see the Northern Lights – Tromso’ for more information on the northern lights – where and how.

They are visible during the months of September to April in clear, dark, and cloudless skies. Tromso in Norway is a great place to set anchor to enjoy the northern lights. This picture postcard city is accessible by flights from Oslo.

NORTHERN LIGHTS

It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to see these intriguing, colorful lights, the ones we specifically travel for. The best way to be introduced to the lights is through a guided tour. There are various options – from group bus tours to private tours, cruises, and boats. Each has its own advantages, tourists can select the best according to their needs. Though small group tours are more flexible. An important word of advice – book the tours in advance as they fill up really fast.

It is a bit challenging to spot the northern lights, as sometimes they may be hard to find,  requiring optimal weather conditions. Therefore having a skilled guide accompany you is worthwhile. They are experienced in predicting where and when to find the lights and know how to track the weather. Additionally,  making the trip interactive with accounts of their experiences; always hopeful and reassuring of successfully seeing the lights.

Often, you have to travel far outside the city for great views. This is the reason why it’s called the northern lights `chase’. You have to literally go on a wild goose chase in search of areas where the weather is clear,  skies cloudless, and wait till it’s totally dark to catch those dancing lights. It is the most incredible experience, as the colorful lights shift and swirl, creating an ever-changing canvas of light. This combined with the stars almost seems as though you are being watched by beings from some other world.

Northern Lights

Here are some useful information for a relaxed and easy stay  :

Usually, tours start late in the evening, after sunset, and can last up to 6 to 7 hours. The duration of the tour depends upon how much longer you want to be there. But, staying awake is what you should be ready for !!

You have to bear the extreme cold to witness something as captivating as this! The sub-zero temperatures of the outside require you to be well-covered in thermals and winter clothes. Most tours provide thermals and snow boots in case it is not sufficient and offer hot drinks, like, soup, hot chocolate, and light snacks to guests. There’s no better way to be comfortable in the freezing outdoors than to have a fire, which thankfully is arranged by the guides. The tour operators ensure that guests are looked after well, providing enough flexibility, stopping at spots they like and overall making it a pleasant experience.

Exploring Ancient Site of Italy – Pompei
If you are looking to explore more of Italy rather than confining to key places like Rome or Venice, then the seaside getaway of Naples & Pompei is where you should head to. Tourists can easily cover the twin cities in one day and plan it as a day’s to and fro trip. Thanks to the wonderful rail system in this continent, travel time from Rome to Naples is 2.5 hours.

HISTORY OF POMPEI

An archaeological site, Pompei reveals the tragic story of a prosperous city buried under volcanic ash thousands of years ago. It was in the year 79 AD, the town marred by misfortune and destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Today it’s  a prominent archaeological site, that draws thousands of visitors. As you step into the ancient city, you can imagine and feel for yourselves the devastation the citizens would have witnessed.
Ancient Site Pompei

Set aside at least three hours for a tour  of this historic site. It’s ideal to hire a guide to know the detailed history of Pompeii. Check for authorized guides only, identified by a badge they wear.  Even though it may not be very reasonably priced (100-120 euros for a personal guide), it’s better to spend that much rather than exploring on your own and getting lost !

Exploring Ancient Site of Italy – Pompei

On reaching the impressive main entrance, Porta Marina, our guide led us to the `Terme Suburbane’ where you’ll come face to face with things least expected – saunas, hot rooms and swimming pool. Isn’t it marvelous that people in those days too were fond of a lavish lifestyle? Moreover, the paintings on the walls revealing people’s taste in art and creativity.
Ancient City Pompei

It’s intriguing to find so many similarities between our contemporary times and the way of living in that era. Such luxuries existed even in those times!

Towards the right stands the Temple of Venus dating to the 1st  century within a vast open area. Apparently religious congregations happened in this square. The oldest known Roman amphitheater is in Pompei. It’s walls depicting paintings of combat scenes and victory celebrations.
Ancient City Pompei

At the intersection of Pompeii’s main street is the ancient square, that had an open market. Our enthusiastic guide shared detailed information about the food habits, shopping, lifestyle of the people

Had it not been for our guide, it would have been difficult to decipher the ruined remains of an ancient city ourselves. It is impossible to explore on your own, therefore taking the services of a guide is a necessity in Pompei.

Top Tips

Wear comfortable shoes. There is a lot of walking around on uneven grounds and pebbled pathways.
Ancient Site Pompei

Be sun protected – sunscreen, goggles or hat.

It takes up to 3 hours to complete the tour of Pompeii, so have that much time with you.

If you are keen to visit Mt. Vesuvius, you need more time. The towering peak  is an hour’s bus ride away from Pompeii and is visible from here. So if you are staying for more than a day, this trip is possible.

`Interesting Facts about Vatican City’

Even though it’s been sometime since I visited the Vatican City, this awe inspiring place is unforgettable. Couldn’t refrain from sharing my experiences of a trip to a world-renowned center of spirituality and spectacular artwork in this write-up `Interesting Facts about Vatican City.’ Though the smallest `country’ in the world, it’s impact is profound. Isn’t it unbelievable that a place with an area of 0.44 sq km, can be considered a sovereign state?  But that’s what Vatican City, lying within the capital of Italy, Rome is. A country that doesn’t require a passport to get into and is at a walkable distance from another European city!

St PETER'S BASILICA

Interesting Facts about Vatican City

St. Peters Basilica, Vatican Museum, within which is the Sistine Chapel are the main attractions of this holy place.   It is overwhelming to be here – not just the crowds but the divine atmosphere that pervades! The exquisite architecture is enamoring.

Sistine Chapel

You have to first cross the Vatican Museum to reach the Sistine Chapel. Beautifully frescoed ceilings and ethereal aura of the Chapel is credited to Michaelangelo’s artistic craftmanship. Depictions of the creation of man by the hand of God is jaw dropping. I haven’t seen anything quite like the Sistine Chapel. Unique and very impressive. Even though you feel like spending more time here, to absorb the peaceful, sacred atmosphere. You can stay only for a limited duration, before being asked to proceed forward.

The Vatican Museum is full of interesting artwork – from Michaelangelo to Bernini and famous Italian artists. Paintings, huge embroidered tapestry works and statues displayed are admirable! As are treasures from ancient Egypt.

Helpful Information for Tourists

Entry to the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel is not free. Tickets sell off quickly, so reserve online in advance. Expect serpentine queues. Timings of the Sistine Chapel are between 7 am to 4 pm.

When you are in the land where the Pope resides, it is inevitable you’ll be keen to see him. On enquiring from the administrators, we came to know that he meets the  public on Sundays at the St. Peter’s Square. This opportunity was however missed since it was not a Sunday on the day we visited!

St. Peter’s Basilica

St. Peter’s Basilica

Stepping into the St Peter’s Basilica, its grandeur dazzles, the rich marble and wood interiors are priceless. Being the biggest Catholic Church in Italy, there’s plenty to see inside.  There being no time constraint, therefore you can stay here for as long as you wish. The most striking feature inside is the canopy over the alter, reaching almost the roof. The famous St Peter’s Square outside, is symbolic of the Vatican, pictures of which on the internet have made it quite popular. The Basilica is open for visitors early and timings are from 7 am to 7 pm.

All about a weekend trip to Edinburgh

After a four and a half hour comfortable train journey from London’s King’s Cross station, we reached Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. The gift of scenic window views compensated for the icy cold winds, on alighting from the train. The palpable excitement of being in the land of fairy castles, unique Victorian architecture and historic grandeur, very much evident. Plus keeping pace with the times, the city has a happening night life and partying scene that is unmatched!

Though a small country lying towards the northern part of Great Britain, Scotland is famous for the Highlands, Loches and a unique  Scottish culture.

City Guide of Edinburgh, Scotland – top sightseeing places.

Edinburgh Castle

The focal point of Edinburgh is the century’s old castle, dominating the city skyline. Quite huge from inside, it consists of the Royal Palace, crown jewels and the National War Museum. The royal family no longer stays here, however the tradition continues – something not to be missed is the firing of the 1 o’clock gun . You’ll get sweeping views of all corners of Edinburgh from the castle. Entry tickets are prices at 16.5 pounds, which is not very cheap! To get the best out of your trip, spend ample time here !

Edinburgh Castle

The Old and New Towns of Edinburgh have been inscribed by UNESCO as being one of the most beautiful cityscapes of the world in 1995. For more details on this visit www.ewh.org.uk

Royal Mile

The busiest street in Edinburgh Old Town is the Royal mile. Thronging with tourists , expect to find a line-up of souvenir shops, markets, stores selling the Scottish checked kilt, restaurants, pubs and hotels. It’s best to roam around here, exploring the alleys and heritage buildings on foot. You’ll find the St. Giles Cathedral which is a major landmark of the Old Town.

Royal Mile

The Scottish capital abounds in different types of fascinating group tours, some of them are by buses or walking. From literary tours, considering the number of literary figures belonging to the country, to haunted tours, ghost tours in the night, Harry Potter tours and so on. Advance booking is required to be a part of these.

Palace of Holyroodhouse

this is still the official residence of the British monarchy and is closed for the public when the royal family is visiting and also on important functions. For more details, check their website www.royalcollection.org .

The guided tour leads visitors through the  impressive royal apartments, finishing in the `Great Gallery’. The palace has a beautiful garden and also ruins of Holyrood Abbey which are nice.

Royal Yacht Britannia is another tourist attraction of Edinburgh

Situated in Leith (3 kms north-east of the city center) this was the royal families floating home, before being decommissioned. An interesting audio tour is available in 30 languages. For more information visit : www.royalyachtbritannia.co.uk

Royal Botanic Garden

The final to be seen spot on my list is another royal site though not an architectural wonder this time – an exotic 300 year old park – the Royal Botanic Garden! This 70 acres of green space, lying just about a mile from city center is  world renowned  for plant research and conservation.

Royal Botanic Garden

Check their range of events from guided walks, to exhibitions and other family activities at their website : www.rbge.org.uk

Its Gothic style architecture, dating back to that period, is the most eye-catching element about Edinburgh. The stone buildings from the Victorian era definitely have a statement to make!!

National Museum of Edinburgh –  would like to include the National Museum of Edinburgh  on my list of City Guide of Edinburgh. Worthwhile to be explored once.

Hope you got a fair idea about How you can plan weekend trip to edinburgh
