A two-day stay in Geneva was initially planned as the final stop on my European tour before heading home. Little did I realize, Geneva offers so much more, given its strategic location—bordering France and just a short distance from Italy! This makes it an ideal base for tourists to embark on scenic day trips to nearby picturesque destinations, which I’ll delve into later in the blog.
This cosmopolitan Swiss city is heavily influenced by its French neighbor, evident in both its language and cuisine. So let’s explore a few of Geneva’s gems:
Lake Geneva & It’s Surroundings
A beautiful, pristine water body often becomes the heart of any place, drawing people like a magnet and buzzing with activity. Lake Geneva is no exception—it is the pulse of the city where tourists flock.
Set against the stunning backdrop of the Alps, there are a host of things to do here. There’s the giant wheel taking you to dizzying heights, peaceful boat rides on the lake surrounded by scenic views. Or as part of your exploration, you can board a train that meanders along the pretty lake, taking you through lush parks and forests.
And you can’t miss the famous fountain on Lake Geneva—the iconic Jet d’Eau is unique and one of the tallest in the world. Definitely worth checking out!
With an efficient and cheap bus system, tourists can easily travel within and the outskirts of Geneva at affordable prices. The best part? You’ll get to soak in the views outside along the way, making your journey as enjoyable as the destination itself.
Palais Des Nations
Geneva is counted as an important global center of historical significance, especially with the UN headquarters located here. It was a fabulous feeling to stand in front of this hub of world peace. I would have loved to take the guided tour inside the UN office (known as the Palace of Nations), but tickets were sold out, so missed out on that experience.
If you are staying longer in Geneva, then taking a trip to the nearby Alp mountain region is worth considering.
One fantastic option is Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, a popular ski resort situated in the French Alps at the junction of France, Switzerland, and Italy. It’s just an hour’s journey by train and bus from Geneva, making it a quick and rewarding day trip.
It was a perfect two day stay in Geneva that was a fulfilling experience !
