Sometimes, we are so caught up in our everyday routines that we forget to press the pause button, take a break, and explore our own city’s hangouts!
It’s always the usual drill — work, household chores, and maybe the occasional dinner out during the weekends. But how often do we slow down, step out of the loop to rejuvenate, and play tourist in our own city?
I had one such “wake-up” moment recently.
Having lived in Bangalore for over a decade, I suddenly realized it had been years since I last visited the famous Lalbagh Gardens — our very own timeless green oasis. The park that draws visitors from across the country had become just a name on a signboard I’d pass by while zipping through traffic.

What pushed me to go finally?
The famous Lalbagh Flower Show, of course!
Every year, on Republic Day and Independence Day, the gardens host a grand display of flowers in all shapes, colors, and creative arrangements. This year, I decided to visit and, in true “Bangalore style,” put together an impromptu plan.
There was no elaborate scheduling, and somehow, the “stars” also aligned.
The day began with that familiar Bangalore nip in the morning air and a drizzle. By the time I reached Lalbagh, the gates were already buzzing with people—families with excited kids, photography enthusiasts juggling their gear, and groups of youngsters enjoying their time together.
Stepping inside the park and continuing further, the flower arrangements were beautiful!
Imagine walking through arches of flowers, discovering roses sculpted into giant structures, orchids spilling over in every shade you can imagine, and chrysanthemums arranged in patterns so neat that they looked like woven carpets.
In the middle of all this stood the iconic Glass House! Wrapped in the lush surroundings, I felt so alive and free.
Wandering from one flower display to another, sometimes pausing to click photos, other times just soaking it all in. It wasn’t just the flowers; it was the atmosphere. You could hear patriotic songs playing softly in the background, see kids waving little flags, and feel this sense of togetherness that was both festive and grounding.

The best part? There was no rush. For a few hours, time slowed down.
As I finally made my way out, I sat on a shaded bench, sipping coconut water, watching the crowds go by. It was: simple, refreshing, and what I needed. A reminder that joy doesn’t always come from expensive getaways or holidays in exotic, faraway destinations. Sometimes it’s right there in your own city. The entire experience struck a different chord in me.
Sometimes, all it takes is one spontaneous plan to reconnect not just with your surroundings, but with yourself!
