Munnar

Top 5 Things to do in Munnar for a Fulfilling Experience

My previous blog on Munnar was about the main tourist attractions in this well-known hill station of Kerala. This blog is about some other spots of Munnar which treat you with beautiful sceneries, are less crowded and ensure a fulfilling experience of this mountain escape. Moreover, an opportunity to explore around, that leave everlasting impressions.

Adventurous Journey Through Lofty Mountains and Forests

A journey to the hills of Munnar are nothing less than a rollercoaster ride. Travelers planning a trip must be prepared for a four-hour road journey, that takes them through thick forests, and precarious mountain bends. A word of warning – the curvaceous route may leave you with a bout of motion sickness; and the best way to overcome that is to grab the front seat of the vehicle. In case, that is not possible then look straight ahead, fixing your gaze on the road ahead and not from the sides of the window. Though, thankfully the discomfort is temporary. On reaching the destination, you’ll forget all your woes and find yourself in the most magical destination.

Munnar

The views on the way are no less impressive as you maneuver your way through Kerala’s protected wildlife reserves and dense forests. This area is home to a range of animals and birds and is heavily guarded. Vehicles coming from outside the state are stopped at the check post before allowing entry.

If you’ve been to Munnar before, you’ll realize that the gushing waterfalls and lakes may no longer what they used to be, having shrunk in number and size to some extent. Fortunately, the greenery and foliage is intact and this hill getaway is as attractive as before, giving tourists joyful experiences and relaxation.

Here are my chosen list of top 5 things to do in Munnar for a fulfilling experience:

ATTUKADU WATERFALLS

You’ll be stunned by these waterfalls cascading down into the valley, as you set eyes on them from atop the tea gardens. A silvery stream ensconced in an emerald cushion! This is the halting point for tourists, for taking in the magnificent views and clicking photographs. And, for those who are unfamiliar with the area, don’t head back from here yet. Walking further on the path going downhill for 2 kms into the valley you’ll reach the base of the falls. You can enjoy the falls closely, though it may not be as impressive from here. This is an ideal place for trekking enthusiasts as well!! At this juncture, a tea break is what trekkers and holiday makers need. Surprisingly, that’s what you’ll find across the bridge – a cute café in the wilderness.

CHENGULAM  – Top 5 Things to do in Munnar for a Fulfilling Experience

Chengulam dam and lake – though not as famous as the Madupetty dam, it’s a highly recommended place on my list as it is less crowded and more serene. Lying in the valley, descend to the tranquil lake to enjoy a boat ride and panoramic views of the surrounding jungles and mountains.  A relaxing time in the park in the front, will surely raise your spirits at the end.

POTHAMEDU & SUNSET VIEWPOINT

Munnar has several breath-taking viewing points, offering excellent views of the rolling hills, verdant forests, tea plantations through floating clouds. Pothamedu being one of my favorites.  Splendid views of the plantations, hills and valley slipping in and out of mist, the backdrop of abundant greenery, the fresh mountain air make it an ideal location for mountain walks and treks.

Sunset Point – as the name suggests, it’s ideal to be here at sunset, and revel in the captivating phenomenon.

Munnar

Tourists will be delighted to discover a string of such idyllic spots dotting the landscape of Munnar. Further up, on the way to the highest mountain Anamudi, as you cross Rajamala, there are few famous points worth exploring. The region has multiple tea, coffee, spice estates. A green velvet blanket covering the mountains and the valleys, enveloped in mist. These are open to tourists who are free to walk in-between, admiring the scenery and clicking pictures.

HYDEL PARK

A beautiful park, with well-manicured lawns, a fine collection of flora and fauna, in the midst of this luxuriant hill station goes by the name of Hydel Park. A placid stream, an aquarium and a zip line for the adventurous are other attractions here.

Another activity that tourists may look forward to in the future is hot air balloon tour . It has been recently introduced, though still not completely operational.

A Tea Break Worth Taking

Passing through the twist and turns of mountain roads, you are sure to come across tea and snack stalls at the bends. It is enticing for the weary traveler to stop here for tea break in between sightseeing expeditions. The cool weather is ideal to sip a steaming cup of tea/ coffee and relish hot snacks like roasted corn or lip smacking maggi. A chance to enjoy your stay from a different perspective.
