Ooty Tourist Places List with Images

Udhagamandalam is the original name of Ooty. But since this was difficult to pronounce therefore the place came to be known as Ooty. Situated in the state of Tamil Nadu, India this quaint hill getaway stands out as the most popular travel destination in the Nilgiris mountain range in South India.

If you put aside, the travel time of 7-8 hours from Bangalore, Ooty is a must visit holiday spot! Out of this 8 hour road journey,  3 hours is definitely through winding hair pin bends, uphill roads and forests. However, this is also an opportunity to spot an occasional elephant drinking water in a pond or a herd of deers crossing the path. Having a camera handy is a great idea when crossing this route, to capture these amazing moments.

LAKE IN OOTY

The mist wrapped blue mountains has an artificial lake at its fulcrum, where tourists can enjoy a rejuvenating boat ride whilst savoring lovely sights of the rolling mountains and forests. There is also a quaint lake garden, eateries, pony and toy train rides in the vicinity, giving  tiny tots a wonderful time. 

BOTANICAL GARDENS – OOTY TOURIST PLACES

Ooty has the most magnificent Botanical gardens. Housing a collection of  ornamental flowers and plants, of the rarest species and carpeted in green!  Don’t miss to check out an impressive Japanese garden also here. Spend hours in these natural surroundings, you’re sure to encounter a sudden drizzle, which is a common occurrence in Ooty. Be prepared with umbrellas and raincoats and enjoy the pretty sights under the cover of a tree.

This well laid out, sprawling  park is the venue for the annual flower show held in the summer month of May. 

ROSE GARDEN

Although  named `Rose gardens’, this park has numerous types of flowers, plants and trees. It’s a pleasure to stroll in this scented garden, blossoming with a vast variety of roses in all hues. 

DODABETTA

In between the rolling hills of Ooty, there are stretches of grassy lawns and tea and spice plantations also worth seeing. Hop into the Dodabetta tea factory to find how tea is made and get a sip of this refreshing brew.  Or plan a picnic at Wenlock Downs, a vast expanse (20,000 acres) of undulating landscape. Bollywood fans will definitely be thrilled being at the shooting points of several movies and blockbusters.

If you come to Ooty and don’t climb it’s highest peak, the Dodabetta mountains, then it’s half the adventure undertaken. Experience unmatched vistas atop this peak, reaching to nearly 8600 feet. 

Along with happy memories, one product you must return with  are the authentic aroma oils – eucalyptus, tree tea, lavender  and tons more, that are produced here. These are a specialty of the Nilgiris, which you will not get anywhere else. Other famous products are tea, spices and chocolates. 

If you have the time, a highly elating activity is the train ride that takes you round the hills of Ooty. Starting from Udhagamandalam it covers the distance of 26 kms till Mettupalyam in a leisurely 4 to 5 hours. Revel in nature’s bounties and incredible views as the train chugs through bridges, tunnels and bends.

A trip to a getaway like Ooty  replenishes our mind, body and soul and is a joyful experience. Something we tourists need to be careful about is over-crowding, littering and creating too much noise. These could spoil the pristine beauty of this magical place.
