TOP 10 PLACES TO VISIT IN GOA WITH FAMILY

Goa and Pondicherry were foremost on the wish list of my mother for places to be visited, and the first of these got fulfilled when we decided on a family getaway to Goa. Subsequently, we got an opportunity to see Pondicherry with her as well. Though this blog is about holiday to Goa. The kids were more than excited for a Goan holiday and that too with a doting grand-parent.

Although there’s a marked difference in present day Goa (concrete structures mushrooming) than what it was a decade ago, yet the place has something for everyone.

Keeping in mind the wet weather, as it was the monsoon season, we booked a resort right on the beach front, having unhindered views of the palm fringed beach. Our abode for the next four days was a  Portuguese style grand villa, having full glass windows and a verandah. You could spend endless moments here, watching  frothy waves roaring and lashing against the shore, or the pitter patter of rains falling on the luxuriant grass. Surrounded by unmissable verdant greenery – a balm to the eyes !!

Recognized for its spellbinding beaches, set next to rolling hillocks, or overlooking cliffs, ancient churches with stunning architecture, and a heady mix of cultures, Goa is truly the hub of good times. The place is forever buzzing with tourists from within the country and abroad and has a lively night life, options are countless.

Below are the top 10 places to visit in Goa with family

Churches of Goa – a sight to behold

Goa has well known churches which are unesco world heritage sites. Endowed with magnificent architecture, they are an epitome of beauty, history and peace. The top among them being the Basilica of Bom Jesus, having an impressive baroque design. This 400-year-old church contains the relics of Saint Francis Xavier.

Lying close by is one of the largest churches of Goa – the Se Cathedral, that’s worth exploring.

The striking white structure of the Immaculate Conception church in Panjim, has been visible quite often in media and movies. This landmark church has the second largest church bell in Goa.  A double flight of stairs zigzag to the top where the main church is located. Also a great point for taking pictures from it’s elevated position and from outside.

Goa is a place where you’ll find world famous churches as well as smaller churches in every neighborhood which are just as sacred and tranquil.

Fountainhas, Panjim

Then there are areas like Fountainhas, in Panjim having a distinctive Portuguese influence. This place takes us back in time and is best explored by foot. Admire typical, fluorescent painted Portuguese styled houses, heritage buildings and get into old time cafes and bakeries here.

What’s a trip to a place like Goa without shopping ? It’s street shopping arcades and markets are quite popular. So the mother-daughter duo indulged in some retail therapy. Mom having an eye for the finer things in life, her taste was exceptional. We picked up things that Goa is famous for – cashew nuts, sea shells, curios and feni.

EXPLORING IN THE RAINS

Monsoon season in Goa has a different charm altogether! You’re welcomed not just by  pleasant weather, there’s lush greenery and misty clouds everywhere. As the beaches are out of bound, due to the perpetual rains, the ideal way  to explore around is by car. And that’s what we did – zipping around town, halting at key points to admire the sites. Reaching right upto the edge of the ocean, where another touristry spot the Dona Paula beach is situated. This point has an interesting love story to it. It was best for us to not step out of the car, as it was pouring, but this in no way dampened the spirits of the crowds who ventured out with umbrellas. When the weather is fine you can climb up the stairs to the observation tower and enjoy picturesque views or go for adventure sport activities available here.

I have visited  Goa before during Christmas which is one of the best times to truly experience the vibe of it. Pulsating with activities – from a host of carnivals to colorful parades, special masses in the beautiful churches to cheerful parties, each and every house aglow with a star, you’ll experience everything.
